Did you click on this article because you’re wondering how you can increase your semen volume? You’re not alone — this is something that a lot of men are curious about. It can be very satisfying to see yourself shoot! Read on to learn more about ejaculation and semen volume, and how you may be able to maximize yours (some sex toys can help!).

First, Some Facts

As we said above, there are lots of reasons why people with penises might want to be able to increase the amount that they ejaculate. This is a common desire and we are not judging it at all; in fact, we’re here to help you achieve it.

But we hope that you’re not feeling inferior because you’re comparing yourself to what you see in porn. Most heterosexual men don’t see other men’s ejaculations, so if your only frame of reference is porn, then you should know that, just like other special effects that are created for movie audiences, the ejaculations you see on screen are often augmented.

When it comes to people who are not paid for their ability to ejaculate on command, however, the average volume of semen is between a quarter-teaspoon and a teaspoon. More forceful ejaculations may create the illusion of greater volume.

Healthy Bodies

Sexual health is often a reflection of a person’s overall health. Being well-rested, well-nourished, and well-hydrated improves your sex life and sexual performance, which can include the volume and velocity of ejaculation.

Ejaculate is mostly fluid, after all, so adequate hydration is the first step in increasing semen production. A recent study suggests that 17% to 28% of Americans are chronically dehydrated. Most people should take in half their body weight (in pounds) in ounces of water, so a 180-pound person should be drinking 90 ounces of water per day. It doesn’t hurt to add in some electrolytes as well to help your body hold on to its hydration.

Eating well overall is also important, but for semen production, we recommend plenty of zinc, selenium, and antioxidants. Your body prefers to get these from whole foods such as dark leafy greens, pumpkin seeds, and Brazil nuts; however, if those aren’t part of your regular diet and you’re not interested in changing that, there are plenty of high-quality supplements readily available (I love NOW Foods, for example).

Other supplements that support semen production and male reproductive health include:

  • L-arginine: increases nitric oxide, which in turn can increase blood flow to the penis and testicles.
  • Maca root: (anecdotally) can increase sperm production.
  • Fenugreek: supports overall hormonal balance, so correcting a mild imbalance may result in increased semen volume.

As always, you should consult your regular health care provider if you have any questions or concerns. There is no reason to feel embarrassment or shame — your reproductive system is as much a part of your body as your circulatory system.

Exercise is another aspect of health, including sexual health. Cardiovascular health and core strength contribute to sexual performance, and pelvic floor exercises specifically target the muscles responsible for ejaculation. As we mentioned above, forceful ejaculations look like more even if they measure the same (and nobody is scooping it up into a calibrated test tube afterwards, so in this case, looks are what really matter here).

A simple Kegel exercise routine is:

  1. Contract the same muscles that you would use to stop urine mid-stream.
  2. Hold for five seconds, then release.
  3. Repeat five times, slowly working up to more.

Do this a few times a day. It may take a few weeks to see results, but you will see them!

Pace Your Ejaculations

For some folks, this is a “nah, not worth it” suggestion — but it does work, which is why we are including it. The World Health Organization recommends abstaining from ejaculating for two to seven days for maximum sperm production; samples analyzed after four days of abstinence showed a larger volume of sperm than those obtained after one day of abstinence. (Interestingly, the one-day samples showed higher-quality sperm than the four-day samples, so people who are trying to conceive should probably not abstain.)

Edging, which is stimulating yourself until you are close to orgasm and then backing down, also increases semen volume. It is often easier to put into practice during masturbation as opposed to partnered sex, but it’s worth a try!

Sex Toys That Boost Semen Volume

We are a sex toy site, so of course we have suggestions! Many people with penises report that changing things up often leads to larger ejaculations. There is evidence that confirms that this happens with new (human) partners, so there is good reason to believe that this is true for sex toys as well. Some toys that work especially well for this purpose are:

  • Prostate massagers: Prostate orgasms are incredibly intense, and stimulation of the prostate releases seminal fluid. People who are interested in maximizing ejaculatory volume would do well to experiment with these toys. We recommend the Aneros Helix Syn Trident, but you can also read our reviews and pick the one that most appeals to you!
  • Automatic masturbators: These products, such as the Kiiroo Keon or Autoblow AI Ultra, are designed to replicate partnered sex — but with more control and more intense sensations. Users and reviewers report extremely powerful and productive orgasms.
  • Suction-based sex toys: These toys produce sensations that most people don’t experience through either masturbation or partnered sex, and the novelty and intensity can produce quick, hard, and voluminous orgasms. The Lovense Solace Pro is a good example of this kind of toy.

Corrections to Consider

We’ve talked about ways to increase semen production, but it’s also fair to talk about some things that may be holding you back. Most of these fall under the category of good general health, but they are worth paying attention to if you have this specific goal in mind.

Smoking (tobacco) significantly impacts sperm quality and production. There are lots of excellent reasons to quit smoking, but one of them is that your ejaculations should rebound within three months of smoking cessation.

Heavy and/or consistent alcohol consumption lowers testosterone and reduces sperm count and quality. The Centers for Disease Control recommend two or fewer drinks per day for people who are concerned about sperm and semen quality. Studies show that as with smoking cessation, three months of abstinence will reverse these effects.

Poor sleep and chronic stress will also impact both your overall health and your hormonal balance; both of these will affect your sex life and your ejaculations. We are well aware that this is easier said than done, but reducing (or at least managing) stress is likely to increase semen production as well as overall sexual satisfaction.

Final Thoughts

We believe in body positivity, which means loving your body and what it does. We also believe that while adult content can be fun and inspiring, we should recognize that it is usually no more representative of real life than reality TV shows are. People in pornography get there specifically because their penises and their ejaculations are remarkable enough to attract audiences. We don’t (or at least we shouldn’t) compare ourselves to 6’10” pro basketball players or opera singers with three-octave ranges; we should not compare ourselves to porn actors either.

That said, there’s nothing wrong with wanting to make the most of what you have, and we hope that we’ve given you some guidance to make that happen in a healthy way!

Happy vibing!
