The Problem With Brands Using AI to Sell Sex Toys

We use affiliate links and may receive a small commission on purchases.

Artificial IntelligenceA while ago, I wrote an article on the misinformation that can spread when Google and AI recommend sex toys. For example, they might not recommend products for the appropriate demographic, they might recommend toys or brands that aren’t even around anymore, etc.

If you want to get a product that’s perfect for you, AI is simply not going to be the best resource to direct you to the perfect toy. But what about when brands themselves use AI to sell their products?

What We Lose with AI

When a brand uses AI to sell their products, it makes it even more difficult to tell if that product is right for you. While sex toys are already something you can’t test out before buying, it’s helpful to learn from someone’s actual experience using it. Of course people on company websites aren’t going to share their completely authentic feelings on a product (though that would be really great— “Hi, I’m the founder of SexToyCompany, and I’m proud to announce our newest product…though not as proud as I would have been if Margie from R&D let us have 35 vibration modes instead of just 7”).

However, product webpages and the accompanying videos and pictures do serve a purpose. We can see how big a toy is, exactly how to use it, how strong the vibration modes are, etc. Of course most product pages have specifications that give you the measurements of the product, but that’s very different from seeing a person hold it in their hands. And when it comes to sex toys…size really does matter! You don’t want to be getting a dildo that’s too huge or too unsatisfying, or even a suction vibe that’s just a little awkward to hold.

We never use AI images in our store. All photos are taken by our talented designer.

When it comes to sex toys, it’s already difficult finding official videos of people actually using them. The only toy I can think of that did that was the Zumio X2, which had very handy .gifs on their product page showing exactly where and how to use it. But of all the toys I’ve tried, that’s the only one. Especially with the rebranding of sex toys as being for self-care, pornographic videos of the CEO using the latest model simply aren’t going to be posted. Whereas with something like makeup or tech, the companies will happily post videos of the product in action.

All of which to say (and I do have a point here), it’s already difficult to find out exactly how to use a sex toy. Sometimes the language is so delicate,  I have to search quite a while to find out whether a toy is meant to be used internally. With actual pictures, let alone videos, being somewhat rare, only having AI images and descriptions available will just make the problem worse. The pictures or videos won’t actually show the product in action, and will be a lot less helpful than seeing a real person holding it and demonstrating the button system, etc.. And even if the videos are completely accurate and capture the exact looks, dimensions, etc., of a toy, if they’re AI, it will be impossible for a consumer to guess how accurate they are.

Not only are AI models fundamentally incapable of providing accurate reviews of toys, but what do you think they’re being trained on? Unless you’ve been blissfully unaware of the recent controversies, AI is stealing its language from copyrighted content that it should have no legal right to “learn” from and regurgitate. So, an AI-generated product page may well be lifting positive-sounding language from sites like ours in order to make a product sound better than it is. Can’t humans plagiarize, too? Of course they can, but I’m willing to bet it’s a lot easier for an AI to generate the phrase, say, “buttery-soft silicone” in regard to a toy with gross-feeling sticky silicone than for a company employee writing the page to say something so blatantly false.

Stop AI companies from stealing copyrighted content!

Even if I were somehow incentivized to write a nice review of a product (which I am not, since I personally don’t get any affiliate money, and get paid the same amount per article), it would quickly become obvious from either my careful wording or my accompanying video that the product was not great. Between my professionalism and my basic ethics, it would be hard to do. AI has no such issues, however, and could easily generate a glowing review/description of a shoddy product by scraping our best reviews and plagiarizing from them.

Stop Me If You’ve Heard This One

AI is not always ethical. Sure, some would argue it’s never ethical, but I’m willing to concede that its abilities at medical imaging are a good thing. But specific benefits aside, let’s look at some of the negative impacts of AI. First, there’s the environmental impact of data centers using up a ton of electricity and water. Seems a lot less wasteful to just get a person to write up a product page for your sex toy.

Then there are the hallucinations. There’s nothing stopping AI from just making something up or saying something that sounds like what the user wants to hear. In a product page for a sex toy, this could look like the AI saying a toy is waterproof when it isn’t, or worse yet, saying a toy can be used in a way it…can’t. And when it comes to the genuine tragedies it’s caused, AI hallucinations are straight out of a horror movie.

A Big Turn-Off

From a company’s point of view, the use of AI in their product pages might spectacularly misfire. Sure, they might save money by not hiring product photographers or actors to make the little videos demonstrating how the button system is laid out, but in the end, they might end up losing money.

Without a true image of how something looks, many customers won’t want to get a toy that they might otherwise have bought. I know if I were in the market to buy an intimate product, I certainly wouldn’t waste money on something without seeing an actual picture of it first. If a picture is AI-generated, I’m going to assume that the real item somehow isn’t as aesthetically pleasing in real life, if not outright different.

Hidden AI

Imagine if someone on a dating app said, “Well, I won’t show you my real face, but here’s an AI-generated image of my face”. You wouldn’t swipe right (swiping right means you like them, right? It’s been a while) and certainly wouldn’t assume they were a babe in real life. It also just looks cheap and a little bit lazy. Yes, this might sound a little shallow, but I like my product websites to have gorgeous layouts and well-produced videos, because that lets me know they have money to spend on R&D and can afford little extras to make their products even better.

Besides, if a company uses AI to show images of the product, who knows what else they’re using AI for? What about things like customer reviews? Who’s to say those aren’t being generated as well? Plus, people just don’t like AI, so an AI-generated image is going to be immediately off-putting.

Keeping it Real

That’s where blogs like ours are helpful. Not only do we give the basic stats about each product, but we also give our opinions on them in a way that AI simply can’t, because we actually use them. AI won’t be able to tell you from hard-won experience if a product has an awkward button placement system, but believe me, I will. Plus, I’ll tell you if a button placement system only looks awkward, but is actually quite intuitive.

All the vibrators we tested

Not only do our written reviews give a real idea of what a product is like, but so do our pictures and unboxing videos. With our pictures, you can see how our products look in real life, not approximations of how they look.

And best of all, you can make up your own mind as to whether you’d like a toy. You can hear in the video how loud a toy is and decide if it’s too loud for your needs. You can see a vibrator placed in some water to see how big the ripples are and decide for yourself if a toy that I described as “too powerful” would be the perfect choice for you or whether a toy that I thought had the perfect button system would be more complicated than you’d want.

We’re not trying to sell you toys by making them look like airbrushed or AI perfection, we just want you to have the knowledge to decide whether a toy is right for you or not.

Happy vibing!
