For many folks, especially people with vulvas who do not climax from penetration alone (and that is the majority), the most powerful orgasms come from oral sex. This may be because oral sex is very intimate and connected. It also may be because it feels very, very good!
We’re here with a list of our favorite oral sex positions. These positions work well for couples of any and all genders!
Table Of Contents
1. The 69
Some folks find it difficult to relax and enjoy themselves when all the focus (and their partner’s face!) is on them and their genitals. If this is the case, the 69 position may minimize self-consciousness. Yes, it’s still very much up close and personal, but everyone is giving as well as receiving.
This position works best when partners are close in height. If there is a significant size differential, the side-lying position that we’re including as an alternative works well because the taller partner may be able to curve their body enough so that all parts line up nicely.
What We’re Doing
- Partner 1 lies on their back with legs slightly spread. They can put a firm pillow under their hips for a better angle.
- Partner 2 kneels over Partner 1’s chest, facing away from them. Partner 2 backs their bottom up until Partner 1 has good access.
- Partner 2 then stretches out to reach Partner 1’s genitals, and both partners perform oral sex.
- Alternatively, partners can lie on their sides facing each other but lying in opposite directions.
2. Sitting Down (Boss Chair)
This position is a natural end to some role-playing scenarios, especially ones where a power dynamic is in play. It’s also a great way to surprise your partner while they are watching TV or just relaxing.
Make sure that the giving partner has a cushion or blanket for their knees (Pro tip: a gardener’s kneeling pad works perfectly!) so they can comfortably settle in for as long as they want.
What We’re Doing
- The receiving partner sits on a chair, on a couch, or at the edge of the bed with legs spread. They can lean back if they are on a chair or couch.
- The giving partner kneels in front of the receiving partner, between their legs.
- The giving partner wraps their arms around the receiving partner’s hips and performs oral sex.
3. From Behind (Doggy-Style)
You may be surprised at how intimate this position feels — lots of us love doggy for lots of reasons, but we don’t always think of it as being highly intimate. But when it comes to oral, it is!
The giving partner is in control here, although the receiving partner can move their hips and bear down (with consent and communication, of course) to increase intimacy. This is also a good position if you want to incorporate a vibrator or butt plug into your play time.
What We’re Doing
- The receiving partner positions themselves on their hands and knees on the bed with legs spread.
- The giving partner kneels behind the receiving partner and performs oral sex.
- If the receiving partner has a penis, it may work better for the giving partner to perform analingus while stimulating the receiving partner’s penis. (If the receiving partner has a vulva, they can also enjoy analingus, but fingers or toys should never go from anus to vagina.)
4. Classic Missionary
Missionary is a tried-and-true favorite for many couples. It is connected, intimate, and versatile (it can be sweet and loving, or raw and more than a little rough). It’s also generally physically comfortable for both partners.
And, it works just as well for oral sex as it does for penetrative intercourse!
If you’d like to spice it up a little, you can try some flavored lubes. We recommend that the receiving partner try a patch test on their thigh or inner arm before applying the lube to sensitive bits, and we also recommend that the giving partner try a taste test. Most lubes made by reputable manufacturers and sold by reputable retailers are body-friendly, but better safe than sorry!
What We’re Doing
- The receiving partner lies on their back on the bed with legs spread and knees bent. They can put a firm pillow under their hips for support or better access.
- The giving partner kneels or lies between the receiving partner’s legs. The receiving partner can prop their legs on the giving partner’s shoulders if desired.
- The giving partner performs oral sex. They can also use their hands to caress and stimulate the giving partner.
5. Face-Sitting
Face-sitting lets the receiving partner be in control of the action, and it gives the giving partner excellent access to all parts of the receiving partner. Both partners need to be completely comfortable for this to work, though, so it’s super important (it always is) to establish boundaries, expectations, and a safe word.
For actual face-sitting, it works best when the receiving partner is smaller/lighter than the giving partner. If the receiving partner is heavier (or if the giving partner is uncomfortable for any reason), we can still capture the spirit of this position if the receiving partner kneels and straddles the giving partner’s upper body but supports much of their own body weight with their legs.
What We’re Doing
- The giving partner lies on their back. They can put a firm pillow under their head for support and/or a better angle.
- The receiving partner straddles the giving partner’s chest and positions their genitals over the giving partner’s mouth. (Most couples find that it works best when partners are facing each other, like the classic cowgirl position, but it can also work in reverse.)
- The giving partner performs oral sex.
6. Standing
Standing is another position that lends itself to spontaneous oral sex (which can be a super fun surprise for the receiving partner).
It can happen pretty much anywhere that you have enough privacy; it doesn’t require any props or preparation, although a cushion, blanket, or towel for the giving partner’s knees is a good thing!
What We’re Doing
- The receiving partner stands straight up, legs slightly spread. They can lean against a wall or other structure for support, which makes it easier to angle their hips forward.
- The giving partner kneels in front of the receiving partner, between their legs, and performs oral sex.
7. Edge of the Bed
This can be a physically challenging position for the giving partner, who needs some core strength and stamina. Partners should be prepared to switch to a less strenuous position if necessary — but this one is still worth a try! If the receiving partner is a person with a penis, deep-throating is possible in this position.
We call this one “Edge of the Bed,” but it works with any flat surface that is sturdy enough to hold the giving partner and the right height. Try the kitchen table (as long as dinner isn’t still on it)!
What We’re Doing
- The giving partner lies on the bed so that their neck is at the edge of the mattress and their head extends past the edge of the bed. They can use a firm pillow under their neck for support.
- The receiving partner stands at the edge of the bed and positions their genitals over the giving partner’s mouth.
- The giving partner performs oral sex.
