What Is a Homemade Fleshlight?
Fleshlights are probably the best-known male sex toys. They were first patented in 1997 as a “device for discreet sperm collection” and they hit the market in 1998. By 2008, over a million units had sold and that number continues to grow dramatically. Fleshlights typically consist of a hard-shell case with an anatomically correct orifice and textured interior sleeve. They are well-known enough that Fleshlight is now commonly misused as a generic term like “Band-Aid” or “Kleenex.”
A homemade Fleshlight is a male masturbator created with common household materials, usually by people who don’t have access to sex toys or adult retailers. It’s certainly possible to create a masturbation device in your home workshop or even on your kitchen table, but it would be almost impossible to match the Super Skin and intricately sculpted interiors that Fleshlight is known for.

Are DIY Fleshlights Safe?
DIY sex toys and gear are never as safe as products made by reputable manufacturers that have design, engineering, and safety teams, as well as access to materials and components that are not available at big-box hardware or craft stores. It is never a good idea to take risks with sensitive body parts!
But if you still really want to make a homemade Fleshlight, please keep in mind:
- Choose your materials carefully: Only use components that are safe to use on delicate human skin. Outside of sex toys and medical devices, very few items are specifically labeled as safe for use on or around genitals, so if you are unsure, you can use a vinyl or nitrile glove as a barrier or wear a condom.
- Cleanliness matters: Male masturbators are exposed to lube and semen, which can harbor bacteria and other harmful microorganisms. Be sure to clean all of your toys thoroughly, which is more difficult when they are not made of silicone or TPE.
- Use plenty of lube: Homemade Fleshlights are rarely as smoothly finished as commercially made ones, so there is a risk of loose threads or other tiny particles that can cause friction. Generous applications of good-quality lube can help alleviate that.
The Best of What’s Out There
We wrote above that we’ve evaluated plenty of ideas for DIY-ing a Fleshlight. We’ve eliminated anything that was unsafe at any speed or anything that cost more than purchasing one at a store or from an online retailer.
If you are determined to make your own, these are the best of what’s out there. They won’t be like store-bought Fleshlights since they don’t have a case or a textured interior, but they are cheap or free to make and you won’t have to wait for it to be delivered.

1. Towels and Socks
We’ll show you three different methods.
Rolled Towel: You’ll need a clean hand towel, a vinyl or nitrile glove, a toothpaste tube, and some rubber bands. Fold the towel in half lengthwise. Place the toothpaste tube in the glove and position it on one end of the towel so the cuff extends past the edge of the towel. Roll the towel around the tube twice, fold the cuff of the glove over the towel, and keep rolling the towel. Secure the towel with rubber bands and remove the toothpaste tube. Folded Towel: For this, you also need a clean hand towel, a vinyl or nitrile glove, and rubber bands. Fold the towel in half and position the glove on one end with the cuff extending past the edge of the towel. Fold the towel in half again, sandwiching the glove. Fold the cuff of the glove over the ends of the towel, and secure the towel with rubber bands. You can see this method in our YouTube video here.
Socks: You need three pairs of socks (each pair should match in size/shape but not necessarily color, so this is a great use of mismatched socks), a vinyl or nitrile glove, and rubber bands. Stack two pairs of socks. Fold each pair from the toes up and put them down with the fold on the bottom. Lay the glove on one pair of socks with the cuff extending out past the edge. Place the other folded pair on top, sandwiching the glove. Fold the cuff of the glove over the ends of the socks. Use the third pair of socks to wrap the sock/glove sandwich and secure with rubber bands. You can see this method in our YouTube video here.
2. Stuffed Toys
You’ll need a stuffed toy, a knife, and a vinyl or nitrile glove. This will obviously change the nature of the toy, so please do not try this with a stuffie that you or anyone else cares about. We recommend laundering the toy first. Use a knife to cut an appropriately sized slit in the toy, and carefully insert a vinyl or nitrile glove into the hole with at least two inches of glove cuff extending out of the slit for easy removal.
3. Sofa Pillows
For this one, we need a clean towel or blanket and, optionally, some bubble wrap. If your couch has a gap between the cushions, fold a piece of bubble wrap in half, if you want to use it, and then fold a towel or blanket around it; if you’re not using the bubble wrap, just fold the towel or blanket in half. Wedge it between the couch cushions for a hands-free masturbator.
4. Water Bottles
You’ll need a standard 16- to 20-ounce water bottle, a nail file, a vinyl or nitrile glove, and duct tape or rubber bands. Cut off the top of a water bottle, and file it with a nail file if necessary to ensure that there are no sharp edges. Fill it about a quarter-full with warm (not hot — test it on the inside of your wrist) water. Place a latex or nitrile glove into the water bottle with the cuff sticking out. Fold the cuff over the edge of the bottle and secure it with duct tape or rubber bands.
5. Toilet Paper Roll
This is probably the cheapest and easiest method on this list. All you need is an empty toilet paper roll, a vinyl or nitrile glove, and duct tape. You can add bubble wrap for texture if you want. Push the glove through the tube with the cuff extending out, fold the cuff over the edge of the tube, and secure with rubber bands or duct tape. Line the glove with bubble wrap if you prefer additional texture.
6. Party Balloon
This is similar to the method above. You’ll need a toilet paper roll, a latex balloon, and duct tape. Put some lube inside the balloon and inflate it slightly. Poke it through the tube, fold the ends over the edge of the tube, and secure with duct tape or rubber bands.
7. Pringles Can
This is one of the most popular DIY Fleshlight hacks, in part because it replicates the hard-shell case. For our version, you’ll need a clean empty Pringles can, a latex sponge, a vinyl or nitrile glove, a pencil, a knife, glue, and duct tape or rubber bands. Trace the opening of the Pringles can onto the sponge and cut out a circle that matches the can opening. Cut the circle in half. Glue each half to the inside of the can, about 1/2” from the top. Push the glove between the halves of the sponge with the cuff extending out the top. Fold the cuff over the end of the can and secure with duct tape or rubber bands.
8. Cornstarch Jelly (Lube)
This works with any of the DIY projects above. You’ll need equal parts cornstarch and water, and a pan. Mix the cornstarch and water. Heat it over medium-low heat until it thickens. Let it cool to body temperature and there’s your lube!
What Not to Do
As we wrote above, we’ve been all over the internet (and elsewhere), and we’ve seen too many truly dangerous suggestions. We understand that people are inclined to improvise when they don’t have access to toys that they want to try, but there are some things that should not even be considered.
- Glass or Ceramic Containers: Real Fleshlights have a hard-shell case, which gives them structure. If you want to try to replicate this in your DIY stroker, you must not use a glass or ceramic container. They may shatter during use, which means that your penis and testicles will be exposed to sharp, jagged shards. Nobody wants that!
- Food Items: Food items such as fruits and vegetables are accessible, inexpensive, and disposable or compostable. They also don’t belong near your genitals. They are high in sugar, so you risk infections or other health problems. Also, very small pieces can break off and lodge inside your urethra. Urinary tract infections are often asymptomatic in people with penises, which makes them very dangerous because you may not be aware of them until they have advanced to a dangerous degree.
- Chemicals: A lot of household and personal care chemicals don’t belong anywhere near your penis. The skin and tissues are delicate, and the urethra is open. You risk irritation, infection, and tissue damage.
- Sharp Objects: We didn’t think that this needed to be said, but we’ve seen proof to the contrary. Don’t use anything sharp, jagged, pointed, or serrated when you are DIYing a Fleshlight. Just don’t.

What’s the difference between a Fleshlight and a pocket pussy?
Fleshlight is a brand that produces male masturbator toys. Fleshlights and similar toys have a hard outer shell for grip and structure and a soft, highly textured interior.
