Maybe you’re feeling crafty, or maybe you like the idea of putting a really personal touch on your really personal playtime. Whatever the reason, if you’re thinking of creating your own DIY dildo mount, we are here to talk it through with you.

Let’s get it out there: our advice is to purchase a solid product like the Liberator BonBon. This is a favorite among our testers and reviewers. It’s $150 on the Liberator website with a bonus bendable vibrator, and you can use our discount code AFF-MSTG10 for 10% off!

However, we recognize that you’re here because you are interested in DIY, so we are going to go over some options that won’t be dangerous to either you or your toys.

Why You Should Trust Us

The folks here at My Sex Toy Guide have a wealth of professional (and personal) experience testing, reviewing, and researching sex toys and sex gear. We are sexual health educators, product testers, and journalists. This is what we do. It’s a passion project for us.

And with that in mind, you should trust that our team is very aware of what goes into quality sex gear. We also know what people should stay away from if they know what’s good for them. We’ve evaluated dozens of suggestions for DIY dildo mounts and selected a few that are worth exploring. To give credit where credit is due, they are from the r/BdsmDIY subreddit and were created by users who have some experience with projects like these.

What Are DIY Dildo Mounts?

A dildo mount is designed to securely hold your favorite dildo or vibrator in place so that you can mount it and ride it. This leaves your hands free to explore the rest of your body, manage some erotica or adult content, or whatever else you desire! Also, mounting your dildo often lets you get deeper penetration and a different angle than when you are lying down.

The Liberator BonBon that we mentioned above is an excellent example of a dildo mount. It positions your toy right where you want it, and the very firm foam provides resistance that enhances your experience (which means that it’s also nice to have around for partnered sex play!).

A DIY dildo mount is one that you create yourself and customize; you can even make your own dildo. The obvious appeal is that you can (presumably) make a mount perfectly suited to your own preferences. The less obvious drawback is that practice makes perfect, and you are not very likely to produce a pro-quality product on your first try (and when it comes to sex gear, “imperfect” can actually be unsafe).

Is Making a Homemade Dildo Mount Safe?

It’s not as easy as you might think to make a DIY dildo mount that is safe. When you think about it, we really ask a lot of a dildo mount. Above all else, it needs to be stable since if all goes well, you’ll be bouncing up and down on it. If it fails to hold, you’ll either tumble off, go down with it, or be impaled on it — none of those sounds like a lot of fun to us!

Woman thinking

Also, you’ll need to be sure that your homemade dildo mount is made of body-friendly, non-porous materials and can tolerate thorough cleaning. Not all materials that you buy at big-box hardware stores are meant to be next to your naked skin!

Again, we think that it’s safest to acquire your sex gear from manufacturers and retailers who make this their business. Their products are thoroughly tested for safety and durability, and you can read reviews from people who have used their mounts or other gear.

The Least Bad Ideas Out There

As promised, our team has reviewed what people are doing (or at least what they are suggesting) as far as DIY dildo mounts. These are some ideas that probably won’t steer you too wrong.

Please note that any action you take is strictly at your own risk, as specified in our Terms of Service.

1. Soft Play Half-Circle

You’ll see soft play half-circles made of firm foam at gymnastics classes. They’re flexible and sturdy, and if you’ve ever wondered if they’d make a decent dildo mount, the answer is yes! You’ll need a dildo or vibrator with a suction cup base (or you could DIY that too), or you’ll need to cut a hole in the foam.

Soft Play Half-Circle

However, these toys are not cheap! (That’s why you usually see them at classes that you have to pay for, lol.) We see them listed at anywhere from $100 to $300 and up. That’s a lot to pay for something that you may have to cut a slot into. And, if that’s the budget you’re working with, why not just get a purpose-built dildo mount like the Liberator Pulse? Plus, it has a much nicer cover.

2. Harness Around a Firm Cushion

It’s no secret that when a couple doesn’t have any penises but still desires penetration, strap-on dildo harnesses are one way to achieve that. Some harnesses go around the hips/crotch and some are worn on the thigh (like this one from Sportsheets), and they are designed to hold a dildo or vibrator.

If you have one of these harnesses, you can repurpose it for solo play if you also have a firm cushion. Just wrap the harness around the cushion, secure your dildo or vibrator, and enjoy!

3. With a DIY Harness

If you like the idea above but you don’t own a harness, that can be your next DIY project! Here’s one from Reddit.

Materials used:

  • 10’-12’ of 1” webbing
  • 2 heavy-duty adjustable buckles
  • O-ring (slightly larger than your favorite dildo or vibrator)
  • Lighter (for sealing ends of webbing)

Step-by-Step Guide for DIY Harness Solution:

  1. Cut two pieces of webbing to the desired length. Use the lighter to lightly melt the ends of the webbing so it does not fray.
  2. Loop each piece of webbing through the O-ring and attach the buckles to the ends of the webbing.
  3. Insert your dildo or vibrator (it should have a wide or flared base) through the O-ring.
  4. Use the buckles to mount your harness to a firm cushion as described above, or any other suitable stable surface. Make sure that the straps are secure.
  5. Bowling Ball

You’ll never think of Homer Simpson the same way again! But a thrift-store bowling ball can actually serve as a decent DIY dildo mount if your dildo or vibrator has a suction cup base. A bowling ball is heavy enough to be stable, and it is non-porous and easy to clean.

This is especially well suited for folks with shorter legs, because the bowling ball does not sit very high off the bed or other surface. Reddit tells us more:

Materials used:

  • Full-size bowling ball (at least eight pounds)
  • Towels for cushioning

Step-by-Step Guide:

  1. Obtain a bowling ball from a thrift store, yard sale, or sporting goods store. Clean it thoroughly before use (we are not concerned with keeping the ball in competitive condition, so you can disregard the manufacturer’s instructions and scrub it well).
  2. Wrap a towel or two around the bottom of the ball so that it is secure and stable. You want to make it a little nest so that it won’t roll or slide.
  3. Mount your dildo or vibrator on the bowling ball and adjust the angle as necessary. The bowling ball should be able to rotate in its nest.
  4. Clean the bowling ball thoroughly after use.

Note: if this appeals to you because we said that it worked well for people with short legs, you could also consider a low-profile dildo mount like the Liberator Wing, which is considerably shorter than the BonBon.

Very Bad Ideas

Every sign or warning label tells a story, and you do not want to be the main character. Do not try any of these ideas for a DIY dildo mount:

1. Glass Bowl

Very few glass bowls are meant to support the weight of an adult human. Also, glass can develop micro-fractures that are not visible to the naked eye but significantly weaken the glass. Even if your dildo has a suction cup mount, you should not turn a mixing bowl upside-down and use it as a dildo mount. It is likely to shatter and glass will go everywhere, including places where you definitely don’t want glass shards.

2. Yoga Blocks

We did suggest a soft play half-circle above, and if you have a single yoga block that is the right size and shape, it would probably work just fine. This warning is about yoga blocks, as in plural, as in stacked on top of each other. A tower of blocks topped with a dildo is not going to be stable, and you will not enjoy it when the tower topples.

We are going to repeat our recommendation to shop for a dildo mount produced (and tested) by people whose job it is to produce safe, body-friendly toys and gear.

Why Is It Better to Buy Commercial Products?

As you have just read, creating your own homemade dildo mount is likely to cost you time and money. Most of us don’t have “extra” bowling balls or gymnastics equipment lying around the house! We think that it makes more sense to skip the extra steps and just buy what you want and need, like the Liberator Humphrey.

Liberator Humphrey

Commercially produced dildo mounts and other sex gear are safer than homemade. There’s no way around this: reputable manufacturers work with engineers, designers, and quality control experts to make sure that each and every product sold is safe to use. The one you make at home might be, it might not be, but do you really want to find out the hard way?

Professionally made gear is also built to last; that’s part of the design and quality control process. As we have already explained, you’re likely to spend almost as much to DIY your own dildo mount as you would to buy one. We think that it’s a whole lot wiser to spend it on a product with good fit, finish, and build quality (plus a warranty!).

Liberator BonBon and Motorbunny Buck

Also, gear from good manufacturers usually comes with some extra features or functions. For instance, the Motorbunny Buck vibrates and thrusts, can be operated with a smartphone app, and has rings to attach restraints! This is way more than our homemade dildo mounts offer, although some ambitious DIYers have made their own Sybians and other sex machines!
