Here’s how to make your own sex chaise:
Materials:
- 4”x8” 1/2” plywood sheet
- Scrap 1”x2” pieces for guides
- 2”x4” lumber for the frame
- 1”x2” pine and scrap plywood for support pieces
- Foam layers such as “supermax” foam, Lux-HQ foam, HD36-HQ foam
- Hardboard
- Dacron batting
- Duck cotton fabric
- Velcro
- Old hose or similar tubing
- Nails
- Glue for foam
- Eye bolts or any material for anchoring
- Sewing machine
Step-by-Step Guide:
- If you can, check out and “try on” commercially available sex chairs. Measure the dimensions and determine what will work best for you.
- If you do not have access to pre-built sex chairs, measure yourself and your partner in different positions and use them as a reference for building the BDSM chair. You will need to calculate the desired height of the back, seat area, and front.
- Cut a 4”x8” 1/2” plywood sheet to the desired length of the chair. Use scrap 1”x2” pieces to create guides for the chair’s contours and secure them to the plywood.
- Form the outline of the chair by bending the old hose or tubing it along the guides. Nail the hose to the plywood to hold it in place.
- Trace around the inside of the hose, account for the foam’s thickness, and use a jigsaw to cut the foam into pieces for the chair’s sides.
- Build a 2”x4” frame for the bottom and attach the sides to it. Add support pieces between the sides using 1”x2” pine and scrap plywood.
- Cut a piece of hardboard to the correct width and tack it onto the supports, following the contours of the top.
- Layer and glue together different types of foam to achieve the desired firmness and attach them to the chair. Consider using 1” layers of foam for easier application.
- Attach Dacron batting to the foam for a plusher, smoother look and feel. Whipstitch the Dacron where the top and sides meet for added durability.
- Create covers for the chair using muslin and duck cotton. You will be making a muslin inner cover and a duck cotton outer cover. Cut the fabric pieces slightly oversized with a 1/2” seam allowance, pin them in place, and sew them together using a sewing machine. Use Velcro to create a closure for the outer cover.
- Add eye bolts to serve as attachment points for restraints. Put the covers on the chaise.
5. DIY Love Pillow
Everybody who loves sex (solo and/or partnered) should have a love pillow. A nice firm cushion helps you position your body at just the right angle and provides support to help you hold that position for as long as you need to.

- You will need some high-quality, high-density memory foam and a sharp knife.
- Cut the foam into your desired shape(s) and glue it together with specialized foam adhesives (most regular glue will melt the foam) or stitch it with clear fishing line.
- Create an inner liner using the cover from a yoga mat or vegan leather, and then create a washable outer cover from a sheet or microfiber bath towel.
6. DIY St. Andrew’s Cross
The St. Andrew’s Cross is probably the most iconic piece of BDSM gear. Its versatility and medieval aesthetic have earned it a place in popular culture. It’s great for both restraint and impact play.
If you plan to DIY one of these, make sure that you test it before strapping yourself or your partner to it. It will need to hold your (or their) full body weight even when you (or they) are straining against it. We turned to r/BdsmDIY again:
Materials:
- Two 2”×6” studs (45×145 mm), 3 yards long
- Additional stud for support
- M10 bolt with washers
- Wingnut
- Heavy-duty door hinge
- Slide lock
- Chains with carabiners
- Eye hooks for attaching restraints or accessories
- Padding for aesthetics and comfort (optional)
Step-by-Step Guide:
- Cut two 2”×6” studs to a length of 3 yards each (can adjust for height if needed)
- Form the cross by sandwiching one stud on top of the other at a 45-degree angle, with one of them cut where the diagonals intersect.
- Use the M10 bolt and wingnut in the middle of the cross to hold the two layers together. Add washers as needed for stability.
- Cut the third stud to the desired height and use it to make a simple leg extending backward from the center of the cross so that it can stand on its own. Slide the leg onto the hinge and secure it with a slide lock.
- Adjust the leg to the desired angle and attach two chains with carabiners at the bottom of the leg to maintain the correct angle.
- Install eye hooks on the cross to attach restraints or other accessories.
- Optionally, add padding for aesthetic and comfort purposes.
This cross can be easily disassembled for storage or transportation by removing the wingnut, carabiners, and slide lock.
7. DIY BDSM Bed
If you and your partner enjoy the BDSM dynamic, maybe you need a BDSM-style bed so that your bedroom becomes your own private playground. Reddit comes through again with instructions on how to transform a standard bed frame into a DIY bondage bed.
Materials:
- Sturdy metal bed frame with rods or a four-poster bed frame
- Replacement fixings for the frame (if needed)
- Pipe insulation
- Rope
- Rug grip mat or shelf liner
- Wall-mounting hardware (optional)
Step-by-Step Guide:
- Evaluate the stability of your bed frame and replace the fixings if necessary (better safe than sorry!).
- Use pieces of rope of various lengths to create attachment points for restraints on the frame. Make sure that they are knotted very securely. If you are using synthetic rope, you can use a lighter to seal the ends to prevent fraying.
- Secure a piece of pipe insulation to the footboard as cushioning.
- Place a large piece of rug grip or several pieces of shelf liner between the mattress and the base of the bed for added security and stability.
- Attach the headboard to studs in the wall (optional, depending on bed placement).
Really Bad Ideas
We have been transparent that we think that it’s safest and wisest to invest in sex furniture made by people who have training and experience making these items.
However, we also understand the urge to personalize some of the most personal things in your life, so we are providing guidance on how to do that as safely as possible.
This also includes calling out some ideas that are very, very unsafe:
- Unstable/Flimsy Material: If you’re going to create sex furniture, it needs to be solid and stable. It is not cheap to purchase materials of the quality needed, but skimping is very likely to injure you and/or your partner (and these days, health care, especially emergency health care, costs much more than solid wood or sturdy bolts).
- Not Following Proper Safety Guidelines: Kink needs to be safe and sane, and that also applies to making your own kink gear. Use the right tools and materials, wear personal protective equipment if necessary, and follow all instructions and guidelines.
Why Is It Better to Buy Commercial Products?
If you’ve made it this far, you’re probably still planning on building your own sex furniture. We are all about informed consent here, so we’re going to drop a little more information. Sex furniture produced by reputable manufacturers and sold by reputable retailers is likely to be:
- Higher Quality: Whether it’s fair or not, manufacturers have access to better materials (foam, fabrics, fastenings) than what’s available at the big-box hardware or craft store. Most sex furniture that you buy will be made of higher-quality components than anything you create on your own.
