You may have found this article after shopping for sex pillows and being unpleasantly surprised by the price tags (trust us, we get it). It’s true that sex toys and gear can be expensive, and it’s very tempting to try to make your own.

We’re going to walk you through some possibilities, but we’re also going to be very clear that it’s rarely a good idea to trust your body and your partner’s body to a DIY project.

We recommend purchasing sex toys, gear, and furniture from trusted brands. As an example, the DOMINIX Deluxe Inflatable is priced at only $49.99 and we’re sharing our 10% discount code AFF-MSTG10.

Why You Should Trust Us

Our staff has (cumulatively) decades of experience researching, testing, and reviewing sex toys and related gear. We have had our hands, and sometimes other body parts, on the best of the best. We’ve also seen the opposite! As such, we are well suited to assess the good, the bad, the ugly, and the downright unsafe when it comes to sex furniture and BDSM toys.

What Are Homemade Sex Pillows?

Sex pillows/wedges are positioning aids that help people achieve and hold positions that would otherwise be difficult or uncomfortable. They are typically much firmer than sleeping pillows, and some do double duty as sex toy mounts.

Sex pillows can also facilitate deeper penetration or different angles. They are great for people who enjoy marathon sex sessions, people with physical challenges, or anyone who needs or wants a little extra support.

Homemade sex pillows are just that — sex pillows or wedges that you have built from scratch or repurposed. If you’re still in the research stage, we suggest that you check out the Liberator Wedge/Ramp Combo. This is one of our top-rated sex pillows. It’s made from ultra-firm memory foam and it can be configured different ways so you can experiment with positions and angles.

Is Making a Homemade Sex Pillow Safe?

A sex pillow has to hold the weight of (at least) two grown adults engaging in vigorous activity. This is not a small demand. It requires high-quality materials, and most of us do not have access to the kind of foams and other materials that these pillows are made of; these are specialty textiles that you just can’t get at big-box hardware or craft stores.

Doggy Style Sex Position With Pillow

If a sex pillow fails during use, you and/or your partner will be thrown off position. This can be annoying, but it can also be more dangerous than many people realize. If “broken penis” makes you shudder, you may not want to trust a homemade sex pillow.

The Best of What’s Out There

Our staff has reviewed and evaluated DIY sex pillow projects from all corners of the Internet. We maintain that it’s safest and wisest to purchase from a trusted source, but if you really want to make your own, we think that these are likely to work out.

Note that any action you take based on the information on this website is strictly at your own risk, as stated in our Terms of Service.

1. Sex Wedge From Scratch

Once again, our friends at Reddit have come through. This project, which is a knockoff of the iconic Liberator wedge, has been around for nearly 10 years and 1700 comments, so we think that it counts as tried and true.

Materials Needed:

  • High-density foam
  • Waterproof yoga mat
  • Machine-washable bedsheet or thin blanket (as soft and plush as you can find)
  • 22” zipper
  • Clear fishing line
  • Foam stretching block
  • Gorilla glue or a similar adhesive that will not melt foam
  • Knife

Step-by-Step Guide:

  1. Cut the high-density foam into the desired shape and size, using the foam stretching block if needed. You will want to stack graduated foam pieces to form a wedge with an angle of approximately 27°.
  2. Apply glue to the bottom of each foam piece, stack them, and press them together.
  3. Stitch the blocks together with fishing line for added security.
  4. Cut and stitch the yoga mat into a sleeve for your foam wedge, slide it over the wedge, and stitch it shut.
  5. Cut and stitch the bedsheet into a cover for the wedge, with a zipper closure for easy removal for washing.
  6. Foam Roller

This project relies on a pre-fabricated foam roller, which we think is a safer choice since the roller was almost certainly produced with foam that’s much denser than what’s sold in stores. You can purchase a foam roller at most sporting goods or big-box stores. We recommend that you craft a set of covers (one waterproof cover that is sewn on to stay and one removable, washable, comfortable cover) for the foam roller as we describe in the project directly above.

You’ll wind up with a sex pillow that resembles the Liberator Whirl below. It’s discreet enough that you can leave it out on your bed, especially if you choose a cover that matches the rest of your décor.

What Not to Do

If you still want to DIY your own sex pillow, here are some words of warning:

  • Don’t Use Flimsy Materials: As we wrote above, your sex wedge needs to support you and your partner even when you are, ahem, exerting considerable force. Shop carefully for very dense, resilient foam. (You may find that purchasing this kind of foam is not any cheaper than purchasing a professionally produced sex pillow.)
  • Don’t Use Hard or Sharp Objects: This seems like common sense, but we’ve heard of people trying to “firm up” their sex pillows with wooden or metal braces. This is a very bad idea! If the foam is not sturdy enough on its own, it will collapse under pressure and then you’ll be having sex on construction materials.

Final Thoughts

Sex pillows/wedges, like sex swings, are excellent props for folks who need or want a little help with positioning. It’s possible to make your own at home, but it’s a lot easier and safer (and often not much more expensive when all is said and done) to purchase sex gear from reputable manufacturers and retailers who make it their business to make these right.
