Doc Johnson is not, as far as we know, an actual M.D., but this vaginal pump toy is kind of reminiscent of a visit to the GYN clinic. It is definitely not luxe or romantic or even sexy, but it does do exactly what it’s supposed to do.
A vaginal pump uses suction to increase blood flow to the vulva and clitoris, which makes that area more sensitive to stimulation. The Doc Johnson Pump is never going to be a social media star, but you may find yourself reaching for it more often than you expected. Keep reading for details!
This is a very basic, but also somewhat effective, pussy pump sex toy. If you’re more interested in the destination than the journey and the scenery, it’s a decent choice. But if you like pretty playthings, you will probably be disappointed.
Who Should Try It? This is a decent choice for folks who are new to pussy pumps and want to start out with a very basic model. It’s also appropriate for people who know that they do appreciate the benefits of said products and don’t care about frills or fancies.
Who Can Skip It? If you have an appreciation for the finer things in life, this isn’t one of them. It’s also worth noting that while a pussy pump can heighten orgasms, it’s not designed to deliver them, so if you’re looking for a sex toy to bring you to climax, again, this isn’t one of them.
You Can Buy It on the official Doc Johnson website for $30.
What Is the Doc Johnson Pussy Pump?
Let’s turn to clinical sexologist Ness Cooper: “A pussy pump is a pump that covers the vulva and produces suction, causing blood flow to the genitals. The pump can help heighten pleasure by activating nerve endings and erectile tissue. The suction is formed when applied to lubricated skin that has minimal hair. When pumped, the labia and clitoris become swollen and erect as both have erectile tissue in them. When the labia is erect, it can tug on the clitoris and lead to further pleasure.”
The Doc Johnson Pussy Pump is a manual pump consisting of a curved suction cup that covers the vulva, a plastic hose, and a bulb that you squeeze to create pressure. There is also a release valve so that you can remove it easily.
First Impressions and Features
Unboxing
Our pump arrived looking somewhat worse for wear, although to be fair, the blame for this probably lies with the shipper. Still, even in pristine condition, the packaging would not be impressive: it’s a thin, garishly printed cardboard box with a plastic tray inside. There is no storage bag or any other amenities or accessories.
The pump itself is fine. The plastic isn’t the nicest, but it does feel solid. The bulb and hose worked as expected. It bothered me more than it should that while all the parts were pink, they were all just a slightly different shade of pink.

How to Use the Doc Johnson Pussy Pump?
There’s nothing to charge, download, or sync. The Doc Johnson Pussy Pump is a very simple manual pump. The only slightly tricky part — and even so, it’s not difficult, just a little fiddly — is getting a good seal.
- Once the pump is assembled, you’ll place the suction cup over your vulva. A little water-based lube (and we really do mean “a little”) will help it stay in place and hold the seal, which is essential for creating suction. It may also help to trim and/or remove hair in the area.
- When you’re ready, gently and slowly squeeze the bulb to draw air out of the cup and create suction. It should only take a few pumps before you start to feel your labia and clitoris swell.
- If you’re new to pumping, you can stop and hold here for a little bit; too much suction on sensitive tissues can leave you feeling bruised, which usually resolves on its own but isn’t a whole lot of fun.
- You can either activate the release valve now and remove the whole thing, or remove the hose and bulb to keep the suction active while you engage in other foreplay. Either way, you’re pumped and primed and ready to go!
My Personal Experience
We admit that we judged the book by the cover, so to speak. The Doc Johnson Pussy Pump’s presentation was so underwhelming that we were prepared for disappointment. It looked cheap and felt cheaper. But we were committed to this review, so…
It was easy enough to assemble and position in place. I gave the bulb a few squeezes and felt warmth and a pleasant pressure throughout my vulva, and it got more intense as I left the suction cup in place.
My lips and especially my clitoris were puffy and sensitive after I released the suction. I grabbed my favorite vibrator and it was almost too much! My clit was ridiculously responsive. This thing works! To be fair, the swelling and super-sensitivity did not stick around too long after I removed the suction, but that’s okay. It was great while it lasted.
We would have liked to see some of the action, but the hot pink suction cup obscured the view. This is a relatively minor complaint, but it would also be a relatively easy fix.
Packaging
As we noted above, the Doc Johnson Pussy Pump’s packaging is unimpressive. The box is thin-feeling and tacky-looking. The plastic tray inside is also rather flimsy, but to be fair, it did a decent job of protecting the contents from what must have been rogue armadillos at the shipping company.
The package had everything we needed and nothing extra. That’s not surprising for a budget piece of gear, but it also wasn’t very exciting.
Ease of Use
The Doc Johnson Pussy Pump is easy to use in every respect. Since it’s manually operated, there are no chargers, batteries, buttons, or controls to fuss with. Simply insert the hose into the cup and off you go! It is equally easy to operate since all you need to do is squeeze the bulb to activate the suction. The hose can crimp if you force it to bend too much, but that’s easy enough to avoid.
Design
The Doc Johnson Pussy Pump works great, and it looks… okay. It’s not hideous. It’s very pink, and we were irrationally annoyed that the pinks were just ever so slightly off (we get it, it’s not easy to get a perfect match across different raw materials, but we’re allowed to be annoyed). The pink suction cup also made it difficult to admire what was going on underneath. The whole thing also has a very budget feel. All materials are body-safe and phthalate-free, which we appreciate, but they were not inviting to the eye or the touch.
But when it comes to functionality, we have far fewer complaints — actually, none at all! The pieces assemble easily, and they are equally easy to use. The suction cup has a slight curve to help it stay in place, and the bulb fits nicely in the hand.
How It Feels
The point of the Doc Johnson Pussy Pump (or most pussy pumps) is not necessarily arousal or orgasm in itself, but preparing the vulva and clitoris for intense sensation. The feeling of the pump and suction is not unpleasant at all, but the real treat comes after you disengage and everything is big, puffy, and incredibly sensitive in the best way possible.
Versatility
The Doc Johnson Pussy Pump has one job. It does this job well, but it doesn’t do much else. The point of a pussy pump is to prime that vagina for whatever comes next, and that’s where you can explore versatility — but it’s not packed in the very pink cardboard box with the pump.
Warranty and Support
Doc Johnson will accept returns of unopened and unused toys for store credit, and offers a limited 90-day warranty against defects. If you purchase from a different retailer, you may have additional protections through them.
These are not awesome terms, but we are honestly not that concerned. This is a simple piece of gear with not much that can go wrong. Any manufacturing defects should be readily apparent (well within the 90-day warranty period).
Minor Issues I Found While Testing
We have already said that our package arrived in poor condition, although we can’t be sure if the manufacturer is to blame. Even without shipping issues, though, the packaging was uninviting. The pink pieces don’t match perfectly, and the suction cup doesn’t give a good view inside. The hose is flexible, but tends to crimp if it is bent more than it wants to be. The suction bulb fits nicely in the hand but can be difficult to grip if it gets slippery with lube. All in all, though, these are minor issues and not outrageous for a piece of gear that sits solidly in the budget tier.

Alternatives to the Doc Johnson Pussy Pump
If you’re intrigued by the potential of a pussy pump but would like to explore something other than the Doc Johnson Pussy Pump, we recommend:
Doc Johnson Bloom Intimate Body Pump
The Bloom Intimate Body Pump is also made by Doc Johnson and it is a definite upgrade over the Pussy Pump. You get multiple heads, hands-free suction, and vibration options. Plus, it looks like the designers on staff actually had some input on this one — it would not be out of place in a sleek IKEA kitchen.
Fantasy For Her: Her Ultimate Pleasure
This is another upgrade with space-age design, multiple settings, and what feels like a flickering tongue. If the Doc Johnson Pussy Pump is basic, Her Ultimate Pleasure is anything but. This toy has it all, to the point where it might be a bit overwhelming if you haven’t played this way before.
