10 Sex Toy Myths Debunked

A couple sitting in front of a laptopI’ve been testing sex toys professionally since 2016 and I’ve heard it all (and then some). After years in the adult industry, I’ve seen all the weird misconceptions and assumptions people have about these gadgets. From “you’ll become too dependent” to “they’re only for certain types of people” these myths have gone on for far too long. Let’s bust ten of the biggest myths about sex toys and I might even share some of my own experiences!

Myth #1: “Sex Toys Will Replace Your Partner”

One of the biggest myths is that using a sex toy will replace the need for a partner. The truth is, toys are just that – tools for pleasure not replacements for intimacy. They’re meant to be added to your experience not swapped in entirely.

In my years of testing, I’ve found that many couples find toys to be a fun addition, not a threat. My wife once joked that she felt “outmatched” by a product we were testing, but within minutes, we were both laughing and finding ways to use it together. But wait, there’s more! Two Indiana University studies about couples who use toys say it has positively impacted their intimacy. So rather than pulling people apart, they often bring them closer.

Myth #2: “Only Single People Use Sex Toys”

Another myth I see is that sex toys are only for solo folks. Reality check: couples use them all the time (A study says it’s 61% of all couples) They’re a great way to experiment, explore, and add new dynamics to your intimate moments.

All the couples vibrators we tested

In fact, one of my favorite memories as a tester was when I reviewed a couples vibrator that requires two people to use it fully. The experience was a whole new level of teamwork and trust. I always remind people that these pleasure products can be a shared experience rather than a solo one.

Myth #3: “Sex Toys Are Addictive”

This one always makes me laugh. Sex toys aren’t like a daily coffee fix. Instead, they are tools you can pick up or put down as you like. The idea that someone would “become dependent” on a piece of silicone is a myth based more on fear than reality.

In my early years of testing, I even found myself thinking “Am I using this too much?” But it turns out there’s no evidence to support the idea of “addiction” with toys. It’s all about balance and personal preference.

Myth #4: “Using Them Means Something’s Wrong with You”

Using a toy doesn’t mean there’s something “missing” or “broken” in your intimate life. I can’t count how many people have felt ashamed for simply being curious about sex toys as if their curiosity meant there was something wrong with them.

Autoblow AI Ultra

For example, I reviewed the super luxurious Autoblow AI Ultra masturbator (image above) for our blog and people messaged me asking “Is this normal?” The idea that pleasure needs “fixing” is, quite frankly, outdated. Using them can lead to more confidence and satisfaction, not self-doubt.

Myth #5: “They Are Only for Certain Types of People”

One of the most ridiculous sex toy myths is the idea that only a “certain type” of person would use them. Spoiler alert: there’s no “type”. Sex toys are for anyone who wants to enhance their experience whether they’re a newbie or a seasoned pro.

Take me for example. I’ve tested everything from beginner vibrators to some pretty advanced gear and each one was designed for different needs. Toys fit all kinds of interests and their versatility is proof of that.

Myth #6: “Men Don’t Need Sex Toys”

This one deserves a special mention since I received so many emails about it. No, sex toys aren’t just “women’s gadgets”. The options for men are growing and believe me they’re not to be sneezed at.

All prostate massagers we tested

Want to hear a personal anecdote? I tested a men’s prostate massager in my early days and I’ll be honest I was skeptical. But after trying it I realized how limited my thinking had been. Men have every reason to try toys if they’re curious – they’re just as rewarding as any other.

Myth #7: “You’ll Get Desensitized from Using Toys”

This one gets brought up so often it needs its own article (Yes, our sexologist Rachel Sommer is writing one as we speak :). There’s a fear that using toys, especially powerful ones will “desensitize” you making natural sensations less intense. While some products can feel a bit intense they don’t fundamentally change your body.

During testing, I’ve tried plenty of powerful models and I can attest that the body bounces back. Just like your taste buds after spicy food your body quickly returns to its baseline. So no, there’s no evidence that using a vibrator too much will desensitize your private bits.

Myth #8: “Sex Toys Are Uncomfortable or Awkward”

Many people think toys are more hassle than they’re worth, uncomfortable, or even awkward. But with advancements in materials and design, sex toys are now some of the most well-thought-out items on the market.

My first review was of a product that looked scary and had a weird shape. But once I tested it I saw the genius behind the design. With modern products, comfort, and usability is always at the forefront so there’s really no need to worry. Top-quality silicone and ergonomic shapes have made all the difference and show how much thought goes into making these things.

Myth #9: “You Have to Spend a Lot of Money for a Good Toy”

While high-end toys are amazing, quality doesn’t always come with a high price tag. You can find great options on a budget if you know where to look. When I started I only reviewed mid-range products and even those were solid.

Womanizer Premium Eco

Through testing, I’ve learned you can find gems at any price point. Some of the most enjoyable models I’ve tested are affordable and accessible and prove that pleasure shouldn’t be a luxury only for high-end purchases. And if you’re looking for ethically made or eco-friendly options there are many companies now offering sustainable materials – just look for labels or descriptions with words like “recycled” or “phthalate-free”. (Womanizer Premium Eco above is one such example.)

Myth #10: “Buying Sex Toys Is Embarrassing”

The final myth is that buying a sex toy is embarrassing. But in my experience, the only shame is in missing out on something that could bring you pleasure. In fact, cultural attitudes around pleasure products vary widely with some places viewing them as taboo while others embrace them without hesitation. It’s worth remembering that even within communities comfort levels vary.

Nowadays, discreet shopping options are everywhere. I remember one particularly discreet purchase where the packaging was so plain I nearly thought it was an electronics part! With online shopping and privacy-focused stores, there’s no need to feel self-conscious.

Final Thoughts

Breaking down these sex toy myths is about setting the record straight and giving people permission to explore without judgment or fear. I’ve been testing these products for years and what I’ve learned above all is that curiosity is a good thing. Don’t let myths hold you back. Permit yourself to try new things, laugh at the surprises, and enjoy the ride.

Every review article has given me a new insight, a new perspective, or even a good laugh. It’s a journey and if there’s one thing I’ve learned it’s that pleasure should be what you want it to be – myths and all. So don’t be afraid to try one or explore a new side of yourself. Take it from someone who’s tested more toys than I can count – go for it – explore, laugh, and maybe find a new fave!

Happy vibing!
