US Sex Toys Trends In 2024: Current Market Size & Statistics

Featured imageHave you ever wondered about the latest trends in America’s sex toy industry? Well, it’s booming! By 2030, we’re talking about a stunning $17 billion industry, as per ResearchAndMarkets.com. Why such a surge, you ask? It looks like the taboos around sexual activities are fading away, and there’s a growing conversation about sexual wellness. More and more people are now turning to sex toys, not just out of curiosity, but to spice up their intimate lives. Let’s dig deeper into the numbers and trends in this article:

Overview of the U.S. Sex Toys Market

According to Globe Newswire, as of 2023, it’s a $9.9 billion (image below) industry and not slowing down.

One big reason behind this boom? We’re seeing a big cultural shift. People are getting serious about sexual wellness, thanks to sex-positive vibes spreading far and wide. Nowadays, exploring your sexuality isn’t just accepted; it’s encouraged. Conversations about sexual health aren’t just whispers in the dark anymore; they’re out in the open!

And gone are the days when sex toys were hush-hush and hidden away. Now, they’re available everywhere – in regular stores and on the Internet. Plus, the folks making these toys? They’re on a roll, constantly developing new, exciting gadgets to keep up with the ever-growing demand.

Key Trends and Consumer Preferences

Vibrators are still the favorite when people are choosing their toys. Nearly half of those who own sex toys in the States – 47% to be exact – have at least one vibrator. Their popularity probably depends on their versatility: you can enjoy them solo or bring them into play with a partner. It’s like they’ve got a setting for every mood and moment!

Now, where are folks shopping for these pleasure gadgets? Online, of course! E-commerce is king in the U.S. sex toy realm with a whopping 32 percent market share. It seems people love the secrecy and the array of choices the internet offers, way more than what you’d find in a regular store. And this trend? It’s only going up as online shopping becomes second nature for most.

Geographically speaking, the West Coast, especially California and Nevada, is leading the way. Maybe it’s the laid-back, open-minded vibe there. But let’s not forget the rest of the country – from sea to shining sea, the sex toy market is buzzing with growth everywhere in the U.S.

Impact of the COVID-19

Thanks to social distancing, everyone found themselves home more often, and guess what? The interest in sex toys went through the roof! According to a meta-analysis involving 2,711 people even showed a spike in self-pleasure and sex toy use during these times.

The pandemic also nudged everyone towards clicking ‘add to cart’ rather than shopping in person. With many stores either shut or barely open, online shopping became the go-to. This shift gave online sex toy sales a big boost. According to a review study, the blend of store closures, keeping our distance, and the sheer ease of online shopping reshaped our buying habits.

Looking ahead, online shopping isn’t going anywhere. The comfort of shopping from home and the privacy it offers are very good. Plus, with tech getting fancier, we might even see stuff like virtual reality sex toys make a splash!

Another trend likely sticking around is the focus on sexual health and wellness. People are getting savvier about how important sexual health is and are on the lookout for products that support it, like lubricants, massage oils, and health supplements. It’s not just about pleasure anymore; it’s about feeling good and healthy, too.

Impact of Artificial Intelligence

We ran a poll on our Twitter/X account, and 64% of the 142 respondents were interested in trying an AI-powered sex toy. That number reflects what we see in our inbox, with more and more people asking us to review products or services with machine learning. (AutoBlow AI Ultra was our first review).

AI-powered devices will constantly learn and adapt to your needs and changing preferences, so the era of one-size-fits-all is over. That also means the need to buy many products may be over too – you buy one sex toy that keep things exciting over many years. Hence, I think we are going to see more expensive sex toys, not just because of the technology but because the brands need to offset lower sales figures in another way.

I also believe this will be a boom for the accessory segment as people want to add more hardware to complement the AI experience, as we have already seen with the Kiiroo Keon Table Clamp (image below) and PowerBlow.

And let’s not forget what AI and machine learning can do for sexual health and people with disabilities. Products will soon analyze sexual data in real-time, helping people diagnose issues like Erection Dysfunction (ED) and prostate health. Plus, companies can access more data that helps develop products for people with disabilities. The future will be exciting!

I talked about this in length in my article about future sex toy technologies.
