What is the Most Popular Sex Toy Color?

Various colorful sex toys

I’ve been testing sex toys for nearly a decade. Literally hundreds of them. In all shapes and sizes, from glitter-drenched dildos to app-controlled strokers that look like they were designed by NASA. On top of that, I’ve written hundreds of reviews, communicated with readers all over the world, and even published an eBook (Available on Amazon).

Even with all that knowledge, I sometimes run into new things that surprise me. One of those things was sex toy colors, something that invokes strong opinions. Because there’s a quiet competition happening in bedside drawers and toy chests across the globe. And it’s not about the strongest vibration or the deepest thrust. It’s about what catches the eye.

So… what color is winning?

Sorry to disappoint those hoping for a deep and mystical explanation behind our chromatic cravings. The most popular sex toy color is plain old purple.

Not black. Not red. And not some sleek chrome or skin tone. Purple.

I used to think purple was just some kind of marketing gimmick because it was just everywhere when I started in this business. But after many years of product reviews and speaking with thousands of readers, I’ve come to understand something: purple sticks. And not just because it’s eye-catching.

There’s something more. Something erotic about it. Think about it. It’s soft to be playful. Dark to look wicked.

When I asked our sex toy tester Rachel Sommer about it, she came up with this explanation: “I don’t know why, but if it’s purple, I’m in. Even if the product sucks. It just looks better while doing the deeds.”

Why does purple dominate?

But I didn’t stop there and kept digging why. I reached out to some Redditors in our subreddit and their responses were fascinating.

Tracy from Michigan said, “Pink makes me feel like I’m 13 again. Red, on the other hand, feels like I’m in a porn movie. But purple? Purple feels like mine.”

Meanwhile, Ricardo, who owns over 20 prostate massagers, told me this: “Black feels too medical for me. Flesh colors feel too realistic. But the deep violet? That color feels right to me. It’s like it knows something.”

Logical? Maybe not but that’s what makes it fun. You see, color is not always a rational choice. It’s actually visceral so you feel it before you think it.

And believe me, manufacturers know about this. That’s why sex toy shelves are practically drowning in amethyst, eggplant, lilac, plum, and similar colors. They figured out what sells. And doubled down.

But isn’t black supposed to be the “sexy” color?

But wait, what about black? That’s what I keep hearing. And for some people it absolutely is the favorite color. Especially among fans of BDSM or people who like their gear to look sleek and serious.

And I personally love my black sex machines. There’s just something beautifully sinister about a black industrial-looking machine, like it’s not asking for permission.

But here’s another less-talked-about issue: You see, black is not a good color for product photos (you can see for yourself in our review photos when we feature black products). A lot of companies, especially smaller ones, avoid it for exactly that reason. But purple pops out in product photos. It shows shadows, depth, and contrast. And when you’re selling products online (like we do), that matters. A lot.

What about the underdogs?

Marketing teams tried blue for a while. Especially the cool, almost icy tones. But it never quite caught on.

They tried red too. It’s a decent option because it shouts passion but doesn’t always invite intimacy.

Pink still gets plenty of love from the passionate crowd. Especially the pastel shades that feel more “cute and flirty” than “teen sleepover”.  But there’s one exception: hot pick, which ages like milk.

And let’s not forget about clear and transparent toys. They certainly have their niche but they have lost a lot of trust because people think they are made from porous jelly materials, which has become pariah (sometimes they are, sometimes not).

Color as an emotional cue

You’d be surprised how much emotional baggage people carry around with color.

For example, we handed out identical vibrators during one of our test sessions. Same brand, same power, Same everything, except the colors. Then we had our product test team rate them for a week.

The results? The purple product scored the highest. Not because it performed better but because my colleagues felt more connected to it. More relaxed with it. More in control while using it.

The clear model came dead last. One tester literally said: “It feels like I’m being watched by a ghost.”

Rachel Sommer expanded on the topic with these words: “Color taps into something primal and it gives your sex toy a personality. And that initial connection is the most important for many many people (Even science backs this up).”

Color and confidence

Here’s something that surprised me when I interviewed people about their favorite toy colors: confidence kept coming up.

“I know it sounds silly,” one reader told me, “but I feel more in control with a sex toy that looks good in my hand. Like I’m the one calling the shots.”

Another person told me they chose their vibrator based how it made them feel when they looked at it. “I didn’t even read the specs when I ordered it. I just knew that deep purple made me feel powerful. Like it was built for me.”

With so many options out there, sometimes the deciding factor is just…does it look good?

My own color confession

So what about your truly? What is my favorite sex toy color? Well, for the longest time I had this thing for dark green. Don’t ask me why maybe it was because of the GI Joe toys I had as a kid.

But I got lukewarm feedback every time I posted a review with a green sex toy. Nobody else liked it. One guy even wrote a comment that it looked like “goblin dick green.” That stung.

But now I know. Every time I post something about a purple product the article gets way more attention. That’s just how it works.

But wait, what about couples?

This is an interesting question that is worth exploring a bit. My take on it: Couples often compromise when they buy pleasure gadgets, especially if one partner is more enthusiastic about it. This is how it works in my household plus from what I hear from our readers.

“I didn’t want a neon blue dildo,” one reader wrote me. “So we bought a matte purple one because it felt less aggressive.”

Another couple told me they chose colors that match their bedsheets. Why? “It’s easier to hide,” they said. “Also, it just feels… like less of a statement.”

Whatever floats your boat.

Does color affect pleasure?

No. And yes. (Que what, Tim?)

Well, technically, the color itself doesn’t change the vibrations or the shape. But psychologically? Yes, absolutely, the color can absolutely mess with your brain.

For example, a vibrator that looks beautiful, sexy, or even mysterious is going to make you feel better about using it. And that confidence often means better orgasms. That’s not science. That’s experience.

One last colorful confession

Let’s wrap up with an unusual sex toy color choice. My friend Holly once told me her favorite shade was neon orange. “Yes. It’s ridiculous. I know,” she said. ” It’s like a traffic cone for my clit. But that’s exactly why I love it. Sex should be fun and not a damn job interview!”

Holly is not wrong because everything doesn’t need to look seductive. Sometimes weird is sexy. Something that makes you laugh or even raise an eyebrow. Those moments could end up being the most memorable.

Final thoughts (and one weird trend)

So purple rules the kingdom. That being said, there’s still plenty of room around the edges.

For example, I’ve noticed a recent trend with some companies releasing brown or copper-toned toys (I see you, SquarePegToys!) I mean not flesh tones. I mean deep, warm, and burnished tones.

They are gorgeous!

And from the early feedback I hear, they may steal some of purple’s thunder. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. At the moment purple still reigns.

Maybe it always will.

Or maybe someday we’ll all be singing the praises of copper-colored cock rings and forest-green vibrators. Stranger things have happened.

Happy vibing!
