How We Picked the Products

Like other toys, a lot goes into separating the highest-quality review samples from the rest. For this article, I shared a questionnaire with my My Sex Toy Guide colleagues. From the questions, I wanted to understand what makes a good product so we can more easily pick the models to review. I collected about three dozen samples from the answers and distributed them among the group. After that, I defined several test criteria we could measure on a scale from 0 to 100. These factors included the following:

• Design. The most effective butt plugs have a tapered design to simplify insertion. The widening build and pointed tip make it easy to push the sex toy through the tight sphincter muscles while promoting a gentle stretching experience. Why we love b-Vibe Rimming Plug:

Let’s not beat around the bushes and jump straight to our test winner: the b-Vibe Rimming plug, which we firmly believe is this year’s best butt plug. The well-designed device recreates realistic rimming pretty well, making it a unique anal toy. The rimming sensation felt great, thanks to the network of rotating beads on the neck.

Confession: I loved the rimming action more than the vibrations, but having them on simultaneously was incredibly pleasing. “Adding rimming was a game changer, but even without it, the sensations complemented each other, and I had fun exploring the experience,” our tester Sandra Larson added.

Besides the exciting rimming action, we loved b-Vibe’s small size. The petite 3.9′ usable length and 1.4′ insertable diameter at the broadest point make it perfect for newbies and intermediate users. Unfortunately, the dimensions rule out the more experienced folks; look elsewhere if you want to test your anal sex limits. In the image above, you can see me measuring the length with a ruler.

Something else that was exciting was the feeling of fullness. The b-Vibe Rimming plug felt cozy in the ass, and having sex or using a G-spot dildo simultaneously gave a unique feeling of double penetration. “I prefer a rumbling consistency over a buzzy feel on my vibrators,” our tester Rachel Sommer wrote in her test report. “The tip vibrations were more buzzy than rumbly. Luckily, the vibrations weren’t as intensive, so the buzz was manageable, even for me”, she continued.

Unlike many of our test samples, the b-Vibe Rimming plug holds onto the ass, making it perfect for hands-free fun. Nobody reported having to reach down or turn it over during use. Excellent design! In addition, the anal toy has a remote control (image below), making the experience more convenient. The cushy remote control all-silicone body was easier to manage than the other remote-controlled models, even with lubed-up hands. We also confirmed that the range worked as advertised.

Pro Tip: Many reviewers recommend this rimming plug for public play, but I think it will only work for certain scenarios. While its small size and cozy silicone body make it comfortable to wear for extended sessions, the large, curved base makes it uncomfortable to sit on for long. So plan ahead!

Lastly, the extended range of sensations makes it an exciting choice for backdoor exploration fans. Even without independent motor control, the 7 rotation and vibration modes, with 6 intensity levels, made butt play fun.

Minor issues we found during testing:

Unfortunately, you can’t independently regulate the rim job and vibration patterns, making it more challenging to customize the sensations.

In addition, the rimming plug costs $159.99, a steep price for the petite butt tingler. I’d have loved it if the price tag came with a dedicated mobile app or independent motor control.

• Design. Unbeknownst to many, the b-Vibe Rimming Plug is more of a medium size (the petite label can be misleading). The testers highlighted how the size and tapered design with appointed tip and widening body made it the perfect choice for most anal sex fans. Why we love Lovehoney Butt Tingler:

We know. The Rimming Plug above is pricey, so we included something for our budget-seekers: the Lovehoney Butt Tingler, which was the most affordable butt plug we reviewed. It only costs $26.99, a massive bargain for the well-designed anal toy. Of course, it’s not the most lavish device on this list, but it’s “good enough” while being easy on the wallet.

Something that stood out when reviewing the Butt Tingler was its ease of use, especially the bullet-like design and slim body, which made insertion and retraction straightforward. Whether you’re new to backdoor fun or an intermediate user looking to add another sex toy to your collection, you’ll be more than happy with this product. In the image below, you see all these features up close.

Let’s move on to the dimensions, which we rated as “Perfect For Travel.” The 3.5″ insertable length (see me measure the length in the image above) and circumference make it one of the slimmest sizes we have reviewed. Although it doesn’t come with a storage bag, it easily fits into any travel plan, so you don’t have to give up on self-love whenever you are on the road.

Butt Tingler is made from high-grade silicone material like all b-Vibe products. It didn’t feel like the coziest silicone, but we believe it will be good enough for most consumers. Especially when we applied water-based lube over the body, it felt smooth, and sliding it through the ass was blissful.

Unfortunately, the vibrations weren’t the most powerful, but what can you expect from a $26 butt sex toy. The light, buzzy vibrations will be enough for beginners and intermediate users but not for anyone craving more buzz. All in all, there are seven vibration modes and three speeds; cycling through the combinations feels climatic, and the higher modes are impactful. The light, buzzy vibrations make the Lovehoney Butt Tingler versatile. I have a sensitive clit, but I used it on my clitoris using higher settings.

Pro Tip: Butt Tingler doesn’t have a wide range of power. It starts slow and maintains the light pulse. If you want something more powerful, consider other models like the Rimming Plug or Hot Octopuss PleX with flex.

Lovehoney Butt Tingler was also incredibly easy to use. The solo button lets you turn it on and cycle through the vibration speeds and patterns. In addition, putting the battery in is easy. Unscrew the base, place the AAA battery inside, and it will buzz once you screw the base back. You can see me demonstrate how to do this in the above image.

Minor issues we found during testing:

My greatest concern was the battery-powered motor. Lovehoney Butt Tingler uses one AAA battery. Even for a budget anal toy, a rechargeable battery would’ve been great.

In addition, there’s no way to tell when the battery is running low. A disappointing masturbation moment is inevitable because the battery is bound to die on you. With the AAA battery power, the vibrations are on the lighter side.

Why Lovehoney Butt Tingler is our budget pick:

• Price. Lovehoney Butt Tingler’s $26.99 price was the most affordable among the reviewed models. The review panel recommended it for people on a budget or anyone looking to add an exciting anal toy to their collection. After all, you don’t have to break the bank.
• Controls. The single-button control interface made it easier to control than the other budget models. While a 2-button control pad would have made it easier to cycle through the vibration patterns, beginners and people new to anal play will appreciate the straightforward controls.

4. b-Vibe Snug Plug 2: Great Wearable Butt Plug!

Why we love b-Vibe Snug Plug 2:

b-Vibe Snug Plug is perfect for those who want something to wear around the house or even in public. After testing it outside for several weeks, we found everything from the skinny neck to the simplistic design comfortable for long-term wear. It also stayed inside better than the other models we tested. Plus, it’s relatively affordable ($54.99) so you won’t have to break the bank when buying it.

Let’s first address the design because it’s the most important for this category. Besides the long, thin neck that makes long-term wear comfortable, our testers also pointed out the barrel shape, which enhanced retention and ensured the plug didn’t slide out once inserted. With a convenient T-bar base (circled in the image below), it’s safe for backdoor exploration, and you won’t have to worry about it getting lost inside you.

Unlike the other samples we tested, the dimensions were bigger on this bad boy. It has a 4.5″ insertable length and 4″ circumference (image above), so please be aware of this before hitting that buy button. The size made it feel solid and fulfilling inside. And even without vibration capabilities, the size was enough to inspire a unique feeling of fullness I missed with the other butt toys. Nice design overall!

We do not often mention the packaging, but we made an exception for Snug Plug 2. As you can see in the image below, it came in giftable packaging, which is excellent for something below $60. The box felt sturdy and looked attractive to the eyes. Although the storage bag could be better, it did its job.

The material was also a standout. The body-safe silicone felt smooth and silky on the hands and inside your ass. I thought using the soft silicone material was genius because it made the weighted body pleasurable without feeling exhausted.

Lastly, the dimensions are customizable, allowing you to pick the most comfortable size when buying it. In addition, the Snug Plug 2 is considerably easy to use for beginners and experienced users alike. There aren’t any buttons to learn since it doesn’t vibrate.

Minor issues we found during testing:

Unfortunately, b-Vibe Snug Plug 2 only provides the feeling of fullness. It doesn’t have vibration capabilities or other functions. So, if you don’t like wearable toys for the feeling of dual penetration during masturbation or sex, you won’t like this baby.

In addition, the dome shape might be a much-needed tweak to enhance retention, but it also complicates insertion.

Why b-Vibe Snug Plug 2 is the best public butt plug:

5. njoy Pure Plug: Great Metal Butt Plug!

Why we love njoy Pure Plug:

The next entry is for the heavy-metal fans out there: the njoy Pure Plug, which we rated as the “Best Metal Butt Plug.” It’s relatively affordable for a metal sex toy, and it’s available in multiple sizes to ensure you use the one you’re most comfortable with.

For this review, we used the medium size with a 1.25″ insertable diameter, and I was surprised at how comfortable and exciting it felt for our intermediate team members. Of course, insertion takes patience and lots of preparation because steel is firm and doesn’t yield like silicone, but it feels incredibly satisfying once inside.

The smaller size has a one-inch diameter, while the larger model measures 1.5″ around the head. The versatility makes njoy Pure Plug ideal for different users. The larger one is more weighty, making it ideal for experienced users looking to enjoy intense anal play.

Note: We got some interesting feedback from our male testers. While they confirmed the usable length wasn’t enough to land on the sweet spot, they admitted it added pleasurable fullness. They suggested that if you want something longer, you can choose its bigger brother, the nJoy Pure Wand, instead.

It was surprising that the metal plug was comfortable for public play. After some research, we found that the slim neck enhanced retention, while the bulbous head added to the pleasurable pressure when sitting. Of course, it depends on how comfortable the chair is, but you’d be surprised how long you can wear it in public without feeling uncomfortable. It also withstood a lot, including running and hardcore moves, without bulging an inch.

The testers also tested the temperature responsiveness of Pure Plug and rated it higher than the other metal toys on this list. It did a better job warming up to match the environment, giving it a pleasant after-feel. “I used warm and cold water, and the difference in pleasure was trackable. The ice-cold shiny body (image below) was more unforgiving, and I’d recommend it for anyone seeking heightened pleasure”, our tester Shane Davis confirmed.

Besides the stunning mirror shine look, we appreciated that it was easy to use and clean. There are no buttons to fumble with, and the multiple sizes allow you to pick the most comfortable one.

Minor issues we found during testing:

I was not too fond of the design around the edge of Pure Plug. It looks like a finger hole, but it’s too small for my pinky. I’m sure it would be too small for most people’s fingers. If the edge were bigger to accommodate a finger, it’d make retrieval easier.

In addition, Pure Plug didn’t come with a sample of lube. People, especially first-timers, tend to forget about stocking up on lube, and adding a sample would’ve been great.

Why njoy Pure Plug is the highest-rated steel butt plug:

• Design: njoy Pure Plug’s mirror shine and bulbous head made it the top stainless steel butt plug we tested. It was just so much better than the other steel models we tested. While the stiff material can be challenging to insert, it’s incredibly pleasurable once inside. 6. Hot Octopuss PleX with flex: Most Customizable!

Why we love Hot Octopuss PleX with flex:

Hot Octopuss PleX with flex is a good option for anyone looking for customizability. The well-designed anal vibe has a dual-motor design with patented Treble and Bass technology, which you can customize to your liking. Although it lacked independent motor control, mixing the rumbles with the buzzing vibrations felt unique. I enjoyed the bass reverberations more, but that’s a personal preference.

The treble motor is positioned at the tip (blue circle above), while the base motor sits in the middle of the shaft (red circle above). Placing the motors in different areas was a genius move that made it easier to feel the difference between the sensations and thus appreciate them more. In addition, the buzzes are more effective on the more sensitive deep butt muscles, and the buzzing rumbles kick right where you need them on the upper part of the anal canal. Great design!

Alright, it was not all roses. It took a while to figure out the ideal setting combination and we tried everything from the slow build-up to the hasty up and down. But once we figured everything out, plex felt terrific.

Unlike the other butt plugs we tested, Hot Octopuss PleX with flex had a 5.5″ shaft, making it a decent option for prostate play. The male testers loved the experience, terming it a double whammy. “I got to experience prostate stimulation bliss because the design and size targeted the P-spot,” our male tester Shane Davis emphasized. “With a considerably thick insertable diameter, the feeling of fullness was the icing on the cake,” Shane added.

Lastly, the design was among the better ones we encountered (ranked number 4). Everything from the rounded head to the slim neck and well-thought build stood out. With a considerably long shaft, hitting the spot was straightforward.

Note: While using the built-in interface was straightforward, the included wireless mobile control was a highlight of the review. Its small size and cushiony silicone material made it easy to handle on the palm, even with lubed hands. We also confirmed it worked well from several feet away.

Minor issues we found during testing:

Unfortunately, you can’t regulate the treble and bass motors independently. Choosing the specific point you want to vibrate on the shaft would’ve been a game changer.

The prostate massager is among the most expensive silicone toys we reviewed. It costs $99.95, a price most people will find steep.

Why Hot Octopuss PleX with flex is the most customizable butt plug:
