Shower sex is usually one of those things that’s exciting because it’s exciting, not because it is inherently a great place to have sex. Still, exciting is a good thing, and so is mixing things up every now and then.
It’s also someplace that you can be noisy even when you have kids or parents or roommates sharing your home.
We’ll give you the eight best shower sex positions, but we’ll also give you a few safety tips:
- You will need a non-slip mat or similar. No exceptions (and really, you should have this anyhow). The shower or tub is slippery when wet, you and your partner will be moving in ways that the shower was not necessarily designed for, and shower/tub walls are not at all forgiving! In this case, safe sex means non-slip sex.
- If you are using sex toys, make sure that they are waterproof. Most modern high-quality toys are waterproof, but it’s always wise to make sure. If you don’t have waterproof toys but do have a hand-held showerhead with adjustable pressure, that works quite well!
- Lubrication, and therefore intercourse, can be challenging. Running water washes away both natural lubrication and water-based lube, and it’s not a good idea to use oil-based lube in the tub (see above about slipperiness!). We recommend silicone lube for shower sex, but remember that you can’t use silicone lube with silicone sex toys.
And now, on to shower sex positions!

1. Carry Me, Baby!
If you are lucky, this will look and feel like a scene from a movie. One partner scoops up the other and carries them to the shower for steamy sex! Once you’re in the shower, the wall serves as support, but you still need to be very careful to stay on firm footing.
What We’re Doing
- The receiving partner sits or lies at the edge of the bed with legs spread.
- The penetrating partner stands between the receiving partner’s legs, leans over, and picks them up.
- The receiving partner wraps their legs around the penetrating partner’s waist and arms around their neck.
- The penetrating partner carries the receiving partner to the shower and props them against the wall. The penetrating partner uses their hand to guide their penis in.
2. Standing Doggy
Doggy is one of the most popular sex positions, and for good reason. It facilitates deep penetration and G-spot stimulation, and hands are free for clitoral stimulation. Classic doggy is not a great position for shower sex, though, but a standing doggy works quite well! (Standing sex is usually best for shower sex, especially because neither partner is likely to feel waterboarded.)
What We’re Doing
- The receiving partner stands with legs slightly spread. They can rest their hands on the shower wall or bar (if the bar is installed and rated for support, not if it’s just there to hold a washcloth) for support.
- The penetrating partner stands behind the receiving partner, between their legs.
- The receiving partner arches their back and leans forward, and the penetrating partner uses their hand to guide their penis in.
Pro tip: if you have a handheld shower head, you can use it for clitoral stimulation.
3. Pile Driver
This position is challenging on dry land and even more so in the shower. It demands core strength, balance, stamina, and coordination. But if you can make it work, it’s worth it! (We recommend putting down a towel or one of those inflatable bath pillows.)
What We’re Doing
- The receiving partner lies on their back in a yoga plow pose with legs lifted towards head, leaning on their arms for support. (Make sure that the shower head is pointed away from their face, or at the very least blocked by the penetrating partner!)
- The penetrating partner stands with knees slightly bent (or squats, depending on height) between the receiving partner’s legs.
- The penetrating partner aligns their pelvises, uses their hand to guide their penis in, and grasps the receiving partner’s hips and thighs.
4. Wheelbarrow
This is another one that’s challenging but worth it! You’ll be able to achieve very deep penetration at an angle that’s highly likely to hit the G-spot.
Make sure to position yourselves so that the penetrating partner’s feet and the receiving partner’s arms are on the non-slip mat; if that isn’t possible, put down a towel for the receiving partner’s arms. Also, make sure to check in with each other to ensure that you both feel stable and secure.
What We’re Doing
- The receiving partner gets on hands and knees in a downward dog position.
- The penetrating partner stands behind the receiving partner, between their legs.
- The penetrating partner lifts the receiving partner’s legs, and the receiving partner wraps their legs around the penetrating partner’s waist.
- The penetrating partner uses their hand to guide their penis in and grasps the receiving partner’s hips and thighs.
5. The Caboose
This is a snuggly position that’s extra-special in a hot shower. Penetration is not super deep, but you get to enjoy full-body contact and plenty of intimacy. Plus, you’re well-positioned for clitoral stimulation with hands, toys, or a hand-held showerhead.
The penetrating partner can sit with their back against the wall for support, which then allows them to support the receiving partner’s body.
What We’re Doing
- The penetrating partner sits on the floor with legs spread and knees slightly bent.
- The receiving partner sits on the penetrating partner’s lap, between their legs.
- The receiving partner lifts their hips slightly and the penetrating partner uses their hand to guide their penis in.
6. Ballet Dancer
This standing sex position is sensual and exciting. It requires some flexibility on the receiving partner’s part, but standing in a hot shower can sometimes loosen muscles up just enough! You get to enjoy a full-body embrace as well as kissing and eye contact.
Please note that this position works best when partners are close in height.
What We’re Doing
- Partners stand facing each other.
- The receiving partner lifts one leg and wraps it around the penetrating partner’s hip or waist. They can hold on to the penetrating partner’s shoulders or chest for support.
- The penetrating partner uses their hand to guide their penis in. The penetrating partner grasps the receiving partner’s hips or lower back to provide support.
7. Standing Oral Sex
Oral sex in the shower is great if either partner is worried about cleanliness or hygiene (you can even extend this to some oral/anal contact if you want to experiment). Enjoy some steamy squeaky-clean fun!
What We’re Doing
- The receiving partner stands with legs slightly spread. They can lean against the wall for support if they want.
- The giving partner kneels in front of the receiving partner. Make sure that the water is aimed away from the giving partner’s face.
- The giving partner performs oral sex on the receiving partner.
8. Mutual Masturbation
Let’s be honest; most of us have masturbated in the shower. There’s nothing wrong with that! But it’s even better when you share the fun with your partner. You can plan this in advance, or you can slip in the shower with them to “help them wash.”
And when you play in the shower, there’s no need for cleanup afterwards — you’re already clean!
What We’re Doing
- Stand facing each other, or sit on the shower floor facing each other.
- Stimulate each other with your hands, waterproof sex toys, or a hand-held showerhead.
