Magic Wand Original Review 2024 | Orgasm Non-Stop!

The Hitachi Magic Wand laying on a bed

When you think of legendary vibrators, one name that always comes up is Magic Wand. This iconic sex toy is often called ‘The Hitachi’ and has dominated the sex toy industry for over 40 years. To see how well it lives up to the hype, I bought one from the Lovehoney to put it through some very rigid testing.

Let’s first talk about my first impressions of the Magic Wand, the design, the features, and how to use the device, followed by my experience using it, and then finish off with some alternatives.

What Is The Magic Wand?

Magic Wand is a hand-held vibrator built to deliver clitoral and other combination orgasms. It looks like a baseball bat with a long white neck, flexible blue neck, and white bulbous head. At the bottom is a 6-foot cord used for powering the device.

Japanese company Hitachi launched the vibrator in 1968 when the sex-positive feminism movement was brewing. The manufacturer first marketed it as a body massager for sore muscles. Still, it didn’t take long before famous sex educator Betty Dodson realized the neck massager was just as effective for clitoral stimulation as massaging sore shoulder muscles!

Today, American company Vibratex owns the brand and has a far-reaching fan base that spans generations, not only in the United States. What started as a simple body massage product is now a powerful vibrator that’s all about women’s pleasure!

First Impressions, Design, and Features

The Magic Wand Original package contains the following;

  • The Magic Wand Original.
  • Instructions manual for use and care.

The Magic Wand Original

1. The Packaging

The Hitachi Magic Wand came to my doorstep in unlabeled brown cardboard. The discreet packaging is ideal, especially if you have a nosy neighbor or inquisitive roommate. The unlabeled package keeps everyone in the dark – even the delivery guy won’t know it’s a device to spice up your sex life!

Under the cardboard box lies a flashy, blue-white box that houses the sex toy. The front part is colored blue with the magic words “MAGIC WAND ORIGINAL” engraved in white. The other sides are colored white and engraved with helpful information on making the most of your purchase.

To get to the Magic Wand, simply break the tamper-proof seals holding the flaps together and retrieve the vibrator. Inside the box, the wand is wrapped well in a clear plastic bag, and you only need to slide it out.

2. The Material

The Magic Wand Original has a white hard plastic body, which is phthalate-free and hypoallergenic. It’s easy to clean, and you only need a moist cloth to wipe off visible dirt marks. The top has a blue semi-flexible neck holding the massaging head in place.

The major downside with this product is the head. You see, the head is made of vinyl, a porous material. Porous materials are more time-consuming to clean and maintain, and bacteria and dirt can accumulate in the tiny holes.

Note: Later models like Rechargeable and Plus have non-porous silicone heads. You can also buy a Silicone cover to protect your vulvas.

Finally, the head accommodates various accessories like Vixen Creation’s Gee Whizzard. (For more about Magic Wand attachments, please read this article)

3. The Head

The wand has a squishy head connected to the handle by a semi-flexible neck. The head filters the vibrations, so they are not as direct compared to a bare motor.

Unlike regular clitoral vibrators, this one is easy to use because the handle doesn’t ‘vibrate.’ For this reason, you can enjoy powerful vibrations without having to change hands every 5 seconds.

4. The Body

The 9-inch long white handle gives it a classic look while simplifying handling. I don’t think it’s particularly huge. The size and weight are just right, and I can easily hold it with one hand.

Further, the body decreases in size as you move down to the power cord, making it ergonomic and easy to grip. You can hold it at the specific point you’re most comfortable with. Whether you want to hold it close to the neck for a more concentrated effect or far back for utmost comfort – it’s all on you!

5. The Controls

The Magic Wand has a handy, easy-to-use control button, allowing you to control the vibrations effortlessly. The one-button control will enable you to turn on the vibrator and alternate between high and low vibration settings with one finger.

On the lower end, the Magic Wand Hitachi delivers 5,000 RPM and 6,000 RPM top speed, allowing you to start with the lower settings and amp up the speed when you’re about to orgasm.

And while most people find the two-speed control insufficient – I don’t have a problem with it. If you do, though, you can buy a Wand Essentials Speed Controller for more speed options.

Note: It’s important to note the device is very noisy. It’s one of the noisiest vibrators I tested. However, if you want powerful rumbles, you’ll probably have to contend with the noise. What’s different about this vibrator is that the vibrations don’t decrease when you press it against your skin. So, don’t be afraid to press it where you need the rumbles. The vibrations are not going anywhere.

My Personal Experience

Let’s start with the essential part first. This woman’s sex toy is a beast. It’s extremely powerful, and I can climax in less than a minute. Also, sometimes during anal sex, I use it on my clit, and cum in less than 30 seconds. I kid you not!

What’s more exciting about the Magic Hitachi Wand is that pressing the head harder on your skin doesn’t diminish the vibration intensity. I usually want to feel the vibrations to the deepest clitoral receptor when I’m about to orgasm, and this vibrator does that perfectly. The vibrations are well-contained and straight to the point!

Pro Tip: Do not leave the vibrator in one place for too long. Keep it rolling by moving it around your vulva.

It makes a lot of sounds, though. I think it’s my most noisy vibrator. Additionally, after using it for a few minutes, I smell a light smoky smell. It’s not that the vibe caught fire or anything. Instead, I think it’s slightly overheating. No biggie, but I always make sure never to use it for longer than 30 minutes.

I have friends who complain that it’s hard to get the full extent of the vibrations because of their hidden clitoris, but that wasn’t a problem for me. I don’t have the most pronounced clitoris, but I found the effect fulfilling.

Some reviewers say it’s not suitable for traveling. I don’t 100% agree with this. While you can’t bring it in your carry-on, you can definitely pack it in your check-in suitcase. In fact, Tim and I brought ours to Hawaii last year!

Pro Tip: A fabric barrier, like underwear or yoga pants, helps you acclimatize slowly. When you’re comfortable with the masturbation experience, you can get rid of the barrier for a more direct sensation. A barrier will also avoid direct contact with the porous wand head, lessening the risk of yeast infections.

  • Durable and high-quality design.
  • Affordable price tag (cost $89.99).
  • No need for batteries; simply plug it in.
  • Compatible with many attachments.
  • Easy-to-use control button.

Cons:

  • The head is made of porous vinyl material.
  • The device has only two power settings.
  • Some women say it makes their clit numb.
  • You always need a wall plug close by.
  • Many counterfeit products exist.
  • It may overheat after extended use.
  • Not waterproof.
  • It’s very loud.

How to Clean Your Magic Wand?

As you already know, the Magic Wand is motorized and runs on electricity. For this reason, you should never submerge it in the water when cleaning. Secondly, never use cleaning materials you’d not use on your vagina. The last thing you want to have near your sweet zone is bleach or a hand sanitizer.

Cleaning the body is pretty straightforward. But the vinyl head requires more care. Please check out our comprehensive guide about cleaning porous material like vinyl.

I recommend cleaning your magic wand after every use. Not only is it easier to wipe off the body fluids, but it also means your Magic Wand is always ready when you are. Trust me! There’s nothing as upsetting as reaching out for your toy and realizing you must douche it first.

Magic Wand Original Vs. Rechargeable Vs. Plus

Magic Wand Plus next to other wand vibrators

  • The Magic Wand Original is the pacesetter among the three Hitachi Magic Wands, and it also shows in its pricing – it’s the most affordable. This vibrator comes with a two-speed control switch that many might find unsatisfactory. The design is pretty decent, too, compared to the others, and handling isn’t a pain in the ass. However, it has a porous head, doesn’t come with a rechargeable battery, and it’s hella noisy.
  • The Magic Wand Plus is an upgrade to the Original. It has a 4-speed interface and a non-porous silicone head, making cleaning super easy. However, Magic Wand Plus is still noisy and has no rechargeable battery. You can read our Magic Wand Plus review here.
  • Lastly, the Magic Wand Rechargeable is the most discreet among them regarding the noise. Magic Wand Rechargeable is also USB rechargeable, cordless, and made of more body-safe materials like a silicone head. Nonetheless, it’s the most expensive of the three sex toys. You can read our Magic Wand Rechargeable review here. We also have a Magic Wand Mini review here.

Review Summary

Stimulation5 out of 5 stars
Power5 out of 5 stars
Cleanup2 out of 5 stars
Price4 out of 5 stars
Overall Rating4 out of 5 stars

First, I gotta say I love the power this baby gives me. It’s my strongest vibrator, and I can orgasm in mere minutes. I also love the ease of use and the durability. I have had mine for five years, and it still works flawlessly. It has never let me down!

But let’s talk about the bad stuff: the head material. I hate porous material, and I’ve written about it many times. It’s so fricking difficult to clean, and you’re putting yourself at risk for a yeast infection. Not happened to me yet, though (knock on wood.)

Instead, I recommend the two newer models, Magic Wand Plus or Magic Wand Rechargeable. They come with non-porous heads but the same amount of power. The downside is they are slightly more expensive, but your vagina health is worth it, guys!

Thanks for reading my Magic Wand Original review!
