How We Picked the Products

First, those of us here at My Sex Toy Guide made a list of thrusting toys that we know and love, and ones that we really wanted to try. This resulted in 42 products to test for this article.

At an average of 5” each, that’s 17½ feet of dildo, or roughly the length of a Ford F-150 crew cab truck. Whew!

We defined the test criteria and rated each on a scale of 0 to 100:

• Design: The best sex toys are purpose-built. G-spot vibrators typically feature a softly rounded head for ease of entry and a curved shaft to hit the sweet spot. Butt plugs also offer a tapered or rounded tip, and they need to have a flared or wide base for safety.
• Settings: Here, we considered both the menu of settings and the user experience. There’s no such thing as too much pleasure, or if there is, we haven’t hit it yet — and not for lack of trying!
• Build Quality: Quality always matters, but especially for sex toys that are used internally. We only considered dildos that were made from body-safe materials such as silicone or ABS plastic. We also looked at the construction and finish of each toy.
• Charging: We strongly prefer toys with rechargeable batteries instead of disposable ones. They are more environmentally friendly, more reliable, and less likely to leave you in the lurch. We did evaluate how long each device took to charge and how long it ran on each charge.
• Special Features: This is where we give extra points to products with unique features and benefits, like app control and/or long-distance remote control, a heating function, or “rabbit ears”.

The testers rated each criterion and submitted detailed written reports. We then calculated a final score, assigning a heavier weight to the most important metrics, such as Design and Stimulation at 25% each. After that come Special Features, Build Quality, and Settings at 10% each.

• Holding it in place takes arm strength, so don’t choose this if your forearms easily become sore. Other Good Alternatives

What Is a Thrusting Dildo?

Just like the label says, a thrusting dildo is a sex toy intended for penetration. It has an internal motor that moves the top part of the dildo back and forth to simulate the thrusting motion of vaginal or anal intercourse.

Most thrusting dildos are at least vaguely phallic in shape; some are crafted to look like erect penises (and some do that better than others).

How To Choose A Good Product

As with all sex toys, there are both subjective and objective considerations and each person has to decide what’s most important to them.

Safety is one of the objective considerations. Especially for toys that will be used internally, you need to look for body-friendly materials such as medical-grade silicone or ABS plastic.

The thrusting vibrator should also be waterproof so that it can be thoroughly cleaned. We recommend silicone dildos since they meet both those criteria, and they do not emit microplastics or phthalates.

Furthermore, we recommend buying sex toys from manufacturers or retailers that offer a generous warranty and will take back toys that are defective or dead on arrival. Most toy manufacturers have stringent quality control standards, but stuff happens, and no one wants to be out money for something that they can’t use.

Price is also objective (it is what it is) but what it represents to a potential buyer is subjective. If you’re not sure that you would enjoy a thrusting dildo, you may not want to invest in the best of the best even if the quality and features justify the price. This is understandable!

However, we can’t support purchasing any kind of sex toy that doesn’t meet basic safety and quality standards (and we won’t recommend any toy that doesn’t).

Some of the thrusting dildos that we tested, like the Velvet thruster, have a stroke length up to 3.5”, and the Hismith sex machine thrusts up to 6”. The most basic models may only thrust 1”. This is obviously a huge range.

We think that it’s generally preferable to overengineer; just because your toy is capable of 3.5” thrusts doesn’t mean that you have to set it that way, but if you have a toy that only does 1.5” and you decide that you want more, there’s not a lot that you can do.

We feel the same way about settings menus — even if you never go past the midpoint, there’s no harm in having 10 speeds and 10 patterns available to you.

However, it’s also reasonable to prioritize other features (or cost) if you know that variety is not the most important thing to you. No matter how extensive the menu, though, the controls should be easy to access and navigate.

Like price, size is also not subjective, but what we want is. Some of us are size queens, some of us prefer petite, and some like a middle ground. All of these are obviously very valid, but it does mean that different people will like different dildos better.

That’s why we have a whole list to choose from!

There is no one perfect thrusting dildo for everyone, because we all like different things and have different priorities. In addition to the above, some things to consider when you’re shopping include:

• Hands-free: If you want to keep your hands free so that you can touch yourself, touch your partner, or engage with adult content, you should look at either a sex machine or a thrusting dildo with a suction cup attachment. A sex pillow with a toy mount will also work.
• Vibrations: Some thrusting dildos also vibrate. If you think that you’d enjoy that, then make that feature a priority.
• Sound levels: All thrusting dildos have motors, and some motors are louder than others. If you live alone or with your partner, this may not be a concern. If your living space is small and/or shared, you may want to focus your search on quieter models.
• Battery: If you’re a person who likes quickies, you’re probably fine with any model out there. But if you prefer extended play sessions, especially at high intensities, you should make sure that you choose a thrusting dildo with plenty of stamina.

How To Use A Thrusting Dildo?

Outside of safety issues (and one major safety issue is using a dildo anally when it was not designed for that — anal toys need to have a wide or flared base), there is no wrong way to use a thrusting dildo or sex toy. It’s yours and you should use it the way that feels best!

We’ll walk through some of the basics below:

1. Treat yourself! Take a warm bath, light a scented candle, and put on your favorite music or adult content.
