How We Picked the Products

In 2016, we wrote the first edition of this article to demystify the topic and educate men on the importance of exploring their sexuality. As you can imagine, more products have sprung up, with a healthy number rivaling our top picks.

For this article, I bought 42 review samples and passed them to my colleagues for testing. I also developed a list of well-defined test criteria to guide the exercise. These included:

• Design. The best products are ergonomically designed to simplify handling and elevate pleasure. Hence, we prioritized sex toys with structural tweaks like a loop handle, an intuitive interface, and a textured surface. Among others, these designs complement the user’s experience.
• Settings. We prioritized products with the most settings, whether vibration or suction modes. Like other adult toys, the more, the better.
• Stimulations. Besides multiple settings, I advised the reviewers to prioritize review samples with various stimulation types. The brand also added something they call Power Rings (shown in the illustration below) just past the orifice. The team noted that they did a good job grasping the penis, which made the thrusting more intense. Yet, in practice, my partner preferred the original version’s design by a landslide. The less flexible perineum arm on the original Lelo Loki Wave added support that helped the toy stay inside. Once placed, the Lelo Loki Wave 2 didn’t stay in place on him for more than a couple of minutes, so it would have been challenging to use during partnered play and intercourse.

Further, the less flexible perineum arm of the original gave the toy enough stability to have the wave motion feel strong against his prostate. With the malleable smaller arm, the wave motion mostly moves the handle while the prostate arm stays in one place. If you decide on the new model, you’ll have to hold it in place to get the full effect of the wave motion. But my partner did feel that this model provided a ton of pleasurable pressure rather than just vibration, as some toys do.
