Sex at night in your own bed can become a very familiar routine, and that’s a good thing in many ways, but it’s also a good and important thing to mix it up every now and then. The “Coolidge Effect” has been documented across genders and even species:
Mrs. Coolidge, observing the vigor with which one particularly prominent rooster covered hen after hen, asked the guide to make certain that the President took note of the rooster’s behavior. When President Coolidge got to the hen yard, the rooster was pointed out and his exploits recounted by the guide, who added that Mrs. Coolidge had requested that the President be made aware of the rooster’s prowess. The president reflected for a moment and replied, “Tell Mrs. Coolidge that there is more than one hen.”
If you are in a monogamous relationship, the answer is not to bring in more hens. The answer is to break out of your routine and focus on your sex life, and a great way to do that is to have sex somewhere that isn’t your comfortable, familiar bedroom. We’re going to share eight positions that you can do anywhere there’s a sturdy chair — even outside if you are so inclined!
1. Chair Cowgirl
Chair Cowgirl is an intimate and connected position because you’ve got a lot of skin-to-skin and face-to-face contact (plenty of kissing!). As in classic cowgirl, the receiving partner gets to control the depth and pace of penetration, and it can be a good angle for G-spot stimulation.
This position offers enough for both partners that it may work as a “quickie,” which is another way to spice up your sex life.
What We’re Doing
- The penetrating partner sits in a chair with legs slightly spread and feet flat on the ground.
- The receiving partner straddles the penetrating partner’s lap, face-to-face.
- The penetrating partner holds the receiving partner’s hips for support.
- The receiving partner lifts their hips, and the penetrating partner uses their hand to guide their penis in.
2. Lap Dance
This is anything but boring married sex! You’ll be entirely focused on each other in the best way possible. Add in your favorite music, costumes, and a bit of role-play (maybe with Monopoly money?) for a little extra spice.
We typically picture a lap dance with the receiving partner dancing for the penetrating partner, and that’s the way we’re writing this, but a role reversal is fun too!
What We’re Doing
- The penetrating partner sits in a chair with their back supported, their legs together, and their feet flat on the floor.
- The receiving partner straddles the penetrating partner’s legs. The receiving partner can face the penetrating partner or face away from them; both choices have their own advantages!
- The receiving partner dances and grinds on the penetrating partner, and the penetrating partner can caress the receiving partner in ways that most good clubs would not allow.
- The receiving partner dances up to the penetrating partner’s lap and arches their back, and the penetrating partner uses their hand to guide their penis in.
3. Chair Doggy
The chair doggy position does depend on a chair, but it’s not a seated sex position. If you like the idea of spontaneous sex somewhere other than your bedroom but you aren’t the biggest fans of seated sex, this is for you!
In this position, you’re both facing the same direction (which isn’t always a given in chair sex), so if you’d like to enhance the experience with your favorite adult content, go right ahead! Also, if you are one of the very many folks who enjoy rough sex at least sometimes, this position works well for that — just make sure that the chair is stable and sturdy enough to support you.
What We’re Doing
- The receiving partner stands with legs spread, and braces themself with their arms on the seat or back of the chair.
- The penetrating partner stands behind the receiving partner, between their legs. The penetrating partner grasps the receiving partner’s hips.
- The receiving partner arches their back, and the penetrating partner uses their hand to guide their penis in.
4. Chair Wheelbarrow
The classic wheelbarrow position is an extremely physically demanding position, but those who can manage it usually agree that it’s worth it for super deep penetration and a great angle for G-spot stimulation. The good news is that it’s somewhat more manageable when the penetrating partner is supported by a chair, which allows them to better support the receiving partner. You still enjoy the same penetration and stimulation, but it’s easier on both bodies!
Note: Make sure to do this on a carpeted surface, or at least put down a blanket or towel to cushion the receiving partner’s arms.

- The receiving partner kneels in front of the penetrating partner, facing away from them, and gets into the plank pose.
- The receiving partner lifts one leg and wraps it around the penetrating partner’s waist. The penetrating partner helps the receiving partner lift their other leg and wrap it around the penetrating partner’s waist.
- The receiving partner leans forward and supports their weight on their arms. The penetrating partner grasps the receiving partner’s hips.
- The receiving partner lifts their hips, and the penetrating partner uses their hand to guide their penis in.
5. Chair Lotus
The lotus position is a mainstay of yoga sex. It emphasizes connection and coordinated, intentional movement. It’s also a very intimate position with full-body and face-to-face contact so that you can kiss and gaze into each other’s eyes.
In the classic lotus position, the penetrating partner sits on the floor or bed with their legs crossed. But body geometry (larger bodies and/or smaller penises) can make penetration this way challenging for some couples, so this position also works when the penetrating partner is seated in a chair with their feet flat on the floor, as shown in our sketch. This also works when the receiving partner needs extra support, since the penetrating partner can better support the receiving partner when they can brace against the chair back.

- The receiving partner sits in the penetrating partner’s lap, facing them. The receiving partner crosses their legs.
- The penetrating partner grasps the receiving partner’s hips.
- The receiving partner lifts their hips, and the penetrating partner uses their hand to guide their penis in.
6. The Hammock
Many of the other chair sex positions in this guide are adaptations of typically standing or lying positions (and that’s okay — they are popular for good reasons). This one is kind of unique in that it really can only be done in a chair, so it’s a fun way to introduce something brand-new to your sex life.
You’ll be able to achieve deep penetration and the angle is usually good for G-spot stimulation. The receiving partner can also enjoy clitoral stimulation, either by grinding against the penetrating partner’s body or by using their fingers since there is excellent access in this position. If the receiving partner finds this position uncomfortable because their head is not supported, you can use a stool or another chair for head support.

7. Bowstring
This position requires flexibility and core strength, but like the wheelbarrow position, if it works for you, it can really work. You can enjoy face-to-face connection and deep penetration. Most chair sex positions start with the penetrating partner sitting in the chair, but this one has the receiving partner seated.

- The receiving partner sits in a chair with their back supported and legs slightly spread.
- The penetrating partner kneels on one knee in front of the chair.
- The receiving partner rests one leg on the knee that the penetrating partner is kneeling on. The receiving partner lifts their other leg over the penetrating partner’s shoulder.
- The receiving partner lifts their hips, and the penetrating partner uses their hand to guide their penis in.
8. Chair Oral Sex
Oral sex in a chair is a somewhat tamer version of a queening or kinging stool, but the idea is the same: both the receiving partner and the giving partner are completely focused on the receiving partner’s pleasure. That sounds fine to us! Either partner can take the seat of honor, or you can take turns. The giving partner may be so turned on that they masturbate while serving the receiving partner, and that also sounds fine to us.
Note: Do this on a carpeted surface or put down a blanket, towel, or gardening knee pad so that the giving partner is comfortable enough to stay there for a long time.
